Did my doctors fail

I have diabetes type 2 now but before the test I was never told that I was prediabetes yet the nurse said to me later that previous to being found diabetic I was borderline. Im assuming that means they failed to tell me I was prediabetic but can someone confirm this for me. I had told my doctor a few times about drinking a lot and they took tests and they said in regards to diabetes I was fine. My faith in doctors and nurses is becoming very low because of experiences I have had and from what others have told me and from what I read in the news. I am starting to understand why many of my elders were refusing to go to hospital or afraid.

I think one of the problems with doctors and nurses are that they see a whole lot of people with a wide range of health issues.

With blood sugar for example some of them may think borderline is quiet OK in comparison to other people they see with high blood sugar.

This is why one should always insist on getting your test results and determining things yourself and taking appropriate action i.e. diet change, more activity and loss of weight.

My doctor and the nurse who gave me the results see no problem with my recent results OGFT 5.6 fasting, 7 after two hours. I however, do see an issue, the numbers are creeping up and I'm doing something about it now (LC diet, losing weight, trying to be more active), not waiting until I'm told 'you're pre diabetic'.

I think that in comparison to other patients they see I look to be doing fine, but it's my life so I'm taking some control.

Drinking a lot doesn't make you diabetic. Raised blood glucose makes you diabetic, I was never told I was prediabetic either, this doesn't make your health care team wrong.

Have you had an HBA1c? If so, what was it? Most of us here can give you many reasons why we don't trust our HCPs, it doesn't mean that you can't.

I don't know how old you are so I don't know if I'm an 'elder', but I neither refuse nor am I afraid to go to hospital......

I made it into the diabetic clinic without being diagnosed with anything at all. I got a letter to go and see my GP to discuss the results of a random blood test of blood taken during visit for something else. When he asked what he could do for me I mentioned the letter I had received and he looked at his computer screen. "There is nothing on here" he said. "Well that's why I'm here" I said.

He phoned the lab who said that a blood sample had been received but the name on it did not match the paperwork so they binned it. He labelled a couple of test tubes himself, gave them to me and said that since he was going on holiday I should go and see the DN on Monday, give her the test tubes and ask her to arrange for an urgent blood test. I did that and on the Wednesday I was pronounced diabetic.

It was not such a great surprise to me so I do not harbour a grudge or anything like that but OP criticises the communication skills of the GP. I too have issues.

For two years after that I took pills and ate the healthy plate. This was not very helpful.

I agree about the doctors and nurses not giving one the full picture. Only when I got my med notes online did I see I was prediabetic and although they did another test and it came back the same [41%] the doctor said not to worry. Another dr at the practice said to 'Watch your diet'. Didn't elaborate on that though!!
