Wendy,
My experience in hospital is:
unless you can manage to arrange for your own food, be prepared to endure a diet of high carb slop.
I survived on salads/soups/veg/nuts brought in by my my wife and stored by the nurses in the fridge.

I had to rely on family and friends, my dh visited every evening after work bringing with him a sandwich (lc bread of course) and a tub of greek yogurt with sweetener, berries and flaxseed stirred in, this was kept in the fridge overnight, had the yog for breakfast and the sandwich for lunch. There was always someone to bring me the evening meal, and I had salami sticks and packets of nuts and home made lc cookies in the bedside cabinet.

I hope all goes well with your operation x

Hi, can I just jump in please and ask for some advice. I also have an operation next month and will have a 2 week recovery period. I follow low carb diet, around max 50g day. My question is after the op and for the following 2 weeks of inactivity would it still be okay to keep to my Low carb plan or is it advisable to incorporate some more carbs into my food?

Hi pez68 !

I don't know what operation you're having but low carb will certainly help with your BG's during and after the op which is vital for recovery and healing as high BG's can inhibit wound healing and are also a factor for wound infections.

I can only speak for myself, I have been twice in hospital during the last 12 months, fractured pelvis and 3 weeks ago needed a hip replacement. I had no problem staying on my lchf diet, in fact I think it helped me to heal faster and at least I didnt have to worry about my bg levels on top of everything else.

Hope all goes well for you x

Pez,
Good luck with the op
Getting low carb in the hospital can be hard as they tend to try to feed you high carb stodge in my experience. plan your emergency rations carefully so that you can cope. Nuts, salads, meat & fish are good, as are full fat yogurts and a good supply of low carb juices.
