I must admit once I stopped getting the lows I stopped being concerned about them. I certainly don't want to repeat them though, very unpleasant. And to that end I have completely stopped drinking alcohol, not that I drank too much but in my mind I associate gin with low blood sugars. My blood sugars tend to rise and stay up for several hours before meandering down. I have attached the graph from the last 24 hours. My target range parameters are set at 4.5 - 10.0. You may think I am stuffing my face with carbs, but no. For a normal person this would be a weight losing diet. Lunch yesterday was a home made green pea soup with some cheese sprinkled on top. Supper last night was a pan seared chicken breast, lettuce salad and tomatoes, no dressing with a couple of potatoes. This morning I did have a banana for breakfast, but it's the only fruit I can eat without getting acid reflux symptoms and my vitamins and blood pressure meds, and I have just had a piece of steak and some rice. You have said you are following your doctor and dsn have advised.
I have been at this since before the turn of the century. And I have studied and learned and talked to a specialist endocrinologist. Most of those on the front line are not specialised in endocrinology. They would not recognise that hypoglycaemia even exists and is so rare, that it is not part of their teaching or their knowledge.
I followed their advice, and I nearly died because of it.
I did say that I wouldn't help but I thought my many experiences of GP's, dsns and of course endocrinology.
A person should not go hypo, unless there is a cause, and it is not something to ignore. Especially on someone who is still presuming you are diabetic and you might not be. And has no knowledge of anything that you do have episodes of hypoglycaemia.
It needs investigation.
Best wishes
Trust me honey, we have ALL wanted to give up on ourselves at some point but we carry on, because we have to and what better place to come when at a low ebb. This site or extended family as I call it has kept me above water many times when I have thought I was about to drown XThanks. I do love this site. I have learnt a lot. I am at a low ebb and I just want to give up sometimes.
Awwww thanks Laine71. It seems like I'm at war with food. It seems my sugars will spike just drinking stone soup lolTrust me honey, we have ALL wanted to give up on ourselves at some point but we carry on, because we have to and what better place to come when at a low ebb. I was tested for gluten intolerance and it came back normal. Funny as I cannot eat products with gluten as I get a bad tummy, feel sick, skin crawls, itchy, dermatitis you name it I get it, but normal according to the tests! I cannot have cosmetics that have gluten aswell as shampoos etc. I have intolerance to rice and anything red, tomatoes red apples etc, yet can just about cope with a granny smith! My sugars are just all over the place at the moment, haven't been in the 5s for a while, I am blaming the meter!!Awwww thanks Laine71. It seems like I'm at war with food. It's awful isn't it. Did they test you for the antibodies, IgA's ? I just had the gene test only, which came back positive, but all that does is rule out Coeliac, doesn't rule it in as you can have those positive genes and never get it. My gluten intolerance is pretty bad too. My food cannot even touch something containing gluten and I will react. If you had the antibody test it is very common to get false negatives. It took my daughter about 10 years before they were able to confirm coeliac. She was just 3 years old when she would cry and complain of stomach ache after eating a slice of pizza with her little friends. Her half sister looked like she suffered from a serious eating disorder due to coeliac she was so malnourished. I'm finding the gluten free diet a challenge. The itchy rash I think is an autoimmune response to gluten called dermatitis herpetiformis. I get a blistery rash on the back of my hair line. Yes, it is shocking how much gluten is in everyday things like shampoos and the like. Pills too. You don't realise until you find your body gets sick on an everyday food, whether it's an allergy or a serious food intolerance.I was tested for gluten intolerance and it came back normal. What is the red colour intolerance? Have you researched it?I was tested for gluten intolerance and it came back normal. if you could take the spikes out, that graph would be normal. From what you have ate, where are these spikes coming from?I must admit once I stopped getting the lows I stopped being concerned about them. I have no idea what the red colour intolerance is but I am googling now. I havent eaten tomatoes or red apples for ages now. I cannot have tomato sauce as it makes my tongue sting and spike my sugar, tomatoes, strawberries red peppers are the same. Yet I can have small amounts of sugar free strawberry jelly and jam! I think I just had the general gluten test nothing else. I have had the blistery rash too but more so when I have applied something with gluten. When this happens it takes week, months to go. Shower gel was the last culprit! What is the red colour intolerance? Have you researched it?
They take around an hour and a half to go up, if you consider that quick. Now if I ate a sugary thing or drink orange juice (which I don't) then yes they shoot up fast, like within 15 mins and come down swiftly to around 6.0 again. In the afternoon my BG's take around 3 - 4 hours to come down. My fbg's have been between 8.0 - 9.0. The hypos, I really have put that behind me to be honest. So you don't think I'm diabetic?if you could take the spikes out, that graph would be normal. From what you have ate, where are these spikes coming from?
I can only assume, that it could be severe low first phase insulin response and then the insulin is triggered to drive the BG back down. They do ascend quite quickly.
Are you aware whether you get hypoglycaemia when eating certain foods? Or noticed when it occurs?
I haven't got that one!!!!I have no idea what the red colour intolerance is but I am googling now. I havent eaten tomatoes or red apples for ages now. Oh wow eh, if you suspect it's coeliac I would urge you to keep getting tested. If you are following a gluten free diet then the antibody test will show negative, even if you have coeliac disease. You would have to start eating gluten again for an accurate test. A lot of people who have coeliac have what they call silent coeliac with no symptoms. The damage is still being done. shocking eh !I have no idea what the red colour intolerance is but I am googling now. I havent eaten tomatoes or red apples for ages now. At least I have intrigued you. Ha!They take around an hour and a half to go up, if you consider that quick. Lol you have intrigued me sir, but then I always find your posts very interesting. At least I have intrigued you. Ha!
The truth is, I just don't know. If I had a graph from back in the day, it would be very similar, including a small spike before the bigger spike on the third spike which I conclude is the carb. But every time I had a spike that high, I would end up in hypo. Your fasting levels are in normal. So, not in diabetes. But only hba1c levels can determine.
If you eat every three hours (ish) maybe before that, it will stop going lower, or your liver is helping and it is only when the insulin overshoot is too much for the high BG levels (with carbs) and the steep dive into normal levels, do you go hypoglycaemic.
But low carb seems to be working.
It is only tests, starting with an extended oral glucose tolerance test.
And only specialist endocrinologist can get them done.
I do hope that makes sense.
Thing is I would feel wretched and be inundated with skin problems, bloating etc. Don't know if I would cope - Quasimodo springs to mind for me not a lovely look!Oh wow eh, if you suspect it's coeliac I would urge you to keep getting tested. That was funny, but of course it's not. Skin conditions are awful.Thing is I would feel wretched and be inundated with skin problems, bloating etc. Don't know if I would cope - Quasimodo springs to mind for me not a lovely look!
Did you retest? Cos that seems to be a rogue reading. Also was that fasting as you got up because dawn phenomenon could impact those readings.Lol you have intrigued me sir, but then I always find your posts very interesting. It does make sense. After a 6.5% Hba1c test back at the beginning of 2021 I got my bg level down to a pre-diabetic 6.2% but now it's rising without changing my diet. My last one was again 6.5% 2 months ago and I have one at the end of the month so we shall see. 6.0 mmol/L seems to be my bg baseline, it doesn't go any lower, maybe on the odd occasion it will drop as low as 5.8 mmol/L even after a carby meal, on a rare occasion. This morning my fbg was an unpleasant 9.1.
