Diet Doctor Low Carb Challenge

You must have affected me @Chook. I really was not well when I went to bed last night. Felt queasy, arms tingling, legs acting up something awful. Took ages to settle. Can only assume something I ate did not agree with me but for the life of me I don't know what. BG before I went off to bed was 7.5 and FBG 7.3. Regular as clockwork I hit 8 pre breakfast.
Gained 1lb at my morning weigh in but that isn't enough to bother me. Being off colour could have affected the balance. Now if I'd gone up 5lbs that would have been a different matter!
Back to family cooking today. Got a slow cooked steak and ale with mushrooms on the go. Will cook pastry for everyone else separately - no soggy bottom!
Going to check @Brunneria's favoured site (the breathe one) too as I want cake - note I don't need it but I certainly want it !

Are you feeling better now? We did a repeat of yesterday but with decaff instead of the caffeinated - went shopping again and I felt fine. So I think it must have been the unaccustomed double ordinary coffee that did it. I do remember my fingertips and nose buzzing which, for me, is something I get with too much caffeine. I certainly gave Mr C a shock and he today he bought all the different Tassimo decaffs so he can't make me the wrong thing again.

Just looking a MFP and I think I'm going to give up the cream in coffee except at weekends - it takes too big a chunk out of my daily calories.

My day to weigh myself is tomorrow - I don't think I've lost anything (although I'm not greedy -just a pound would be nice) but I was so happy that last year's summer clothes all fit.

We bought Jack a new bed yesterday - by this morning he'd chewed it literally to bits. On the plus side it kept him occupied so we got a bit of a lie in. I hate giving him back his horrible hard plastic bed but I think we'll just have to wait until his chewing phase is over before buying another nice soft one.

@Chook your Tassimo reaction is interesting (esp in view of my own reactions to coffee).

But it might not necessarily be the caffeine. There are supposed to be about 300 different chemicals in coffee (and chocolate, and cigarettes, I believe, which is one of the reasons they are all such complex flavours and so 'addictive').

It may be one of the other 299 chemicals which is the problem.

Heck, it could even be something that Tassimo put in their pods, and not to do with the coffee at all.

Sorry if these comments are muddying the waters.

Yes I am but I still want cake. Almost settled on a lemon coconut one as the others that appeal I'd need to go out for the odd ingredient.
I'm sure you have but have you tried Jack with one of these humongous rawhide? Son's leonberger was a chewer but the rawhide kept him amused for a while - the humongous one anyway.

Yes, Jack just eats them. He's not into chewing for the sake of chewing, he likes to chew lumps off and swallow them. Luckily, so far, its all gone through but we do have to be vigilant. It was Archie that ate my blood testing kit so we now keep all sharps above dog height. Having said that Mr C was gardening today and when I looked out Jack was wandering round with an old carving knife in his mouth. I don't know what happened to Jack where he lived before (apart from living in a crate 22/24) but I'm fairly sure he was treated very badly and with Labs it really is a case if you reap what you sow.

@Brunneria. I really hope not. I don't get it with chocolate but I eat very little of it. I definitely don't want to experiment with drinking the full caff stuff because I felt really ill. I've now had three or four different Tassimo decaffs and they all seem okay. It's only in the days that I drink normal coffee that it happens.

For Jack:

have you heard of Himalayan Chews?
they aren't cheap, but they last for ages, and they have a fascinating smokey cheesy scent. Very tough chews.

or pizzle sticks.

We were warned off rawhide by the Puppy Class lady, because of the choking risk.

They all love pizzle sticks.... but the stench. They only have them on dry days when they can eat them outdoors.

I will look out for the Himalayan chews. I'm sure they will love them. We got them some of the dental chews - gone in 30 seconds. That's Labs for you. . About the only thing that occupies them for hours is a big juicy marrowbone each which they then like to bury for later). I always think that future archaeologists are going to be very confused by the bones in our garden.

FBG was 6.2 - not bad especially as there was a half hour delay between getting up and testing.

I weighed this morning and -yes- I've GAINED 2lbs. After all that carefulness, calculating and weighing of everything I ate last week I actually gained. I can't help but wonder exactly what miniscule amount of food I would need to eat to lose a pound.

It beats me @Chook. It's tough keeping protein down too and some days it just hasn't happened. As I said I wasn't too bothered about 1lb as I hadn't feel too good the night before. I think we just have to give it time. We know very low calorie doesn't work plus it's not sustainable. Like you though I still feel the need to keep calories to a reasonable amount - about 1200/1300 but I had a couple of days last week I was struggling to get it above 1000. I think in my case it is a matter of changing things every so often but not to the extent my body thinks it is being starved (although why it would think that I don't know!).
If nothing else my BG seems to finally be settling. Bed on 6.7 FBG also 6.7. Nights are very stable apart from the 3am ish dip. Got as far as 7.9 pre breakfast which is good by my standards. My ideal range I have set for my BG is 4.3 to 8 and it's nice to see I was in range all day yesterday despite it being 'feeding the family' day. Another glorious day today. Brother restarting chemo (the new one) but he is still planning on visiting the pub with Hubby later . Fortunately , he tolerates chemo well. I have another trip to soft play with the boys but I have a quiet week otherwise. Will head up to Dobbies Wednesday probably as the garden will be needing colour soon.
Will be inserting Libre 2 later. Give it plenty of settling time before activation. Seems a shame that just as it gets really accurate it is time for replacement.

I'm setting my calories for 1250 Monday to Friday and 1500 at the weekends. It was very difficult having people to dinner on Friday and not over-eating.

Yes, we've done a lot of garden related things at the weekend. The veg area is looking lovely with all its little plants in nice straight rows. So far we've planted lettuce, two types of runner beans, chard, purple sprouting broccoli, mangetout and brussel sprouts. In the greenhouse we've got some of those enormous marmande tomatoes and a variety called super marmande which I've not grown before but I'm hoping for some enormous tomatoes. I've also sewn some courgette and kale seeds. The garden was all neatened up before Saturday's visitors and it was okay enough to sit out there for a pre-dinner drink and some people chose to take their dinner (buffet style) out there to eat but I didn't think it was THAT warm.

I've promised myself I'm not going to get upset about gaining weight when I've tried so hard this week; as you say, we need to give it time.

My BG has been behaving itself - it has been between 4.2 and 6.5 all weekend - the 6.5 was after Saturday evening's dinner plus wine but went down to 5.4 just before going to bed.

We are on week 5 of the keto DD menus. Mind you, it has taken us about 8 weeks to get this far in.
The food just keeps getting better and better.
Yesterday was beefburgers with goats cheese, courgette chips and tomato mayo. Sublime.
And tonight is a chicken thing with aubergine rollups, with ooodles of cheese and gooey stuff.

Mr B is joining the keto fest now too.
He has been eating DD, but... in all honesty... he has been eating too many carbs when out at work and for breakfasts, when out of my gentle guidance*
Anyway, after a little discussion about expanding waistlines, he knuckled under last week, and is sticking to the DD food, plus low carb breakfasts. The high fat high carb combo was causing the expansion.
And you know, he has visibly lost weight already.

I am not jealous. I am NOT jealous. I AM NOT JEALOUS.

*you can interpret the phrase gentle guidance in whatever way you wish.

We had the DD baked Brie tonight (used Camembert) - bit of a nightmare dividing it in two. Lidl do some small round individual cheeses - might try using those instead of a whole Camembert.

It was absolutely delicious - I was going to have a go at the seeded crackers to go with it but didn't get around to it as my back is decidedly iffy and going into spasms and I'll be sitting all day at work tomorrow so wanted to keep it on side for that!

Tomorrow night is going to be a chilli con carne with tomatoes AND kidney beans - that'll be a test for my carb limit ...

I'm mixing and matching with some DD recipes along with making LCHF versions of my normal recipes.

I did an @Brunneria last night. I couldn't sleep due to being hungry and I ended up staring into the fridge at 2.15am then deciding on lidl protein roll toasted and buttered as being suitable for a middle of the night snack.. I can't ever remember needing to eat in the middle of the night before (apart from when I was working nights, of course). Not surprisingly my FBG was 7.1 this morning.

Ah well, a fresh start today .... with the restrictions on carbs and protein I'm struggling to get my calories up to 1250. I think I'll order in some more avocados next week.

We are trying to use up the contents of one of our big freezers so I'm expecting some strange food combinations over the next couple of weeks.

Very annoying, isn't it? I don't mind the hunger, or the need to snack, but I do resent the time I spend lying in bed thinking 'ignore it, it will pass, just go to sleep.'
and then, when it doesn't pass, I have lost an hour's sleep.

I am in awe of people who can go to sleep when hungry.

Back to having a jar of peanut butter on the bedside table. Haven't needed one a night time snack in over a year, and then I had 3 in a week.

Maybe we are eating too early? Trouble is, we time our evening meals around Mr B's shifts, not my late night snacking.

Mr C has been moved on to a permanent 1-10 shift (which he prefers) so I can most days have my dinner when I feel like it. Yesterday was the first day of this shift change so I had breakfast at 8.15, then no lunch and dinner at about 6. Then I went to bed at 12 (after waiting for Mr C to come home and a bit of a chat). I didn't really feel THAT hungry when I went to bed but after laying awake for a couple of hours I decided to get a mug of Bovril ..... and ended up staring into the fridge.

I used to have dinner at about 6 on a working day but went to bed at about 10. Now I'm going to bed two hours later. I think I'm going to have to change when I have my dinner or maybe have a mug of Bovril before going to bed.

With us, Mr B is in a phase of early starts. That means he has to go to bed at around 8pm, in order to get up around 4am. And he needs to eat at least 2 hours before going to bed, esp since these DD high fat meals are slow to digest. Last night we ate at 6pm, which is a bit too late for him, and FAR too early for me. But I treasure our meals together.

I will just have to snack at 10pm.

A fly swatter works well

Did you bake a cake?

Mr C has just finished three months of 8-5 which, in reality, was 7.30-6. Those hours really didn't work for us at all. He found himself walking the dogs at 5.30am and again after dinner each evening for an hour each time. When he was transferred to this new location it was to work 'afters' but someone at the same level had just left the day shift so they thought they were doing Mr C a favouring by allocating him to days. His company do personal development reviews every three months and they were a bit taken aback when in his first review he said that had he known he would be working days he wouldn't have applied to work there. The next day he got moved on to his chosen shift.

I'll get used to it - looking back in my food diary I see that I did used to eat at 6 but always had a small snack at about 10 - the problem with that is I got higher FBGs.

Still no cake - was bed changing and laundering yesterday
