Hi all. I wonder if anyone here has any tips for this.

How do you deal with diet drinks when out most places here tend not to supply bottle or cans and instead come out of taps. I've often had arguments with staff who gave me the wrong drink and then think I'm being rediculess wanting another

Hi,

I usually request that the 'diet' drink is served in the original bottle. However, if you are unsure that the drink is sugar free, you can test for sugar with your blood glucose monitor by dipping straight into the drink.

Re: Diet drinks ins restaurants

I usually order a plain or sparkling water in places I know tend to make mistakes. If I order a soft drink I usually double check when it arrives that it is diet and mention being diabetic to them. If in any doubt I send it back asking for another, don't care what anyone thinks, it's my health I'm taking care of.

Some people suggest urine testing strips dipped in the drink to check for sugar. I didn't know you could check using blood testing monitor, I'll be doing that in future! :D

I usually ask for soda water or sparkiling water.
can anyone who has tried it, tell me if using Glucostix works? i wonder if they would recognise sucrose, since several of the simpler chemical tests DON'T! they only recognise glucose.

Unless soft drinks are in a bottle, can or carton I don't bother, like you I don't trust the pump dispensers.

having worked in the pub and hospitality industry for a few years I know if what i get doesnt match.

Never had a problem if i thought a drink wasnt sugar free, instant replacement normally with an apology.

Can you name and shame places youve had a problem? I would kick up a fuss (your paying for a specific item!) and want the manager brought into play. meantion your diabeties in the end if they are wrong the could be liable should you fall into a diabetic coma :***:

I have had this many times. I dont care what folk think either. I think the mention of being diabetic gets ppl all scared and they sort it asap. They dont want u ill on their premises. Fast food restaurants i find are the worst because they are serving too many ppl at once and often 2 or 3 ppl serving the same customer. The customers are then all bunched up at the till. I try to watch what drink comes to our tray but its impossible.

Pizza hut are the worst here happens nearly every time in there. Not sure if there are any in England but we have a chain stake house here called spurs.

They served me "Pepsi Max" after the first drink I asked for my free refill and I watched the girl go over to the tap and fill it with normal Pepsi. To be told she thought they were the same thing. I emailed and complained I got a phone call all The way from their American office apologising and they gave me £100 of vouchers.

Another one here is dominos pizza. Nearly always deliver full fat coke cans when I order diet .

Never had an issue with McDonalds etc you tend to see what tap they are using when they fill it up.
