Hi, after perusing this forum, I have attempted to eat diabetic-friendly meals. Below are my meals and drinks for yesterday. Constructive criticism apprreciated.

Breakfast - two weetabix with semi-skimmed milk. One cup of de-caffe coffee.

Lunch - Salad without dressing (lettice, beetroot, cucumber, cheese, mushrooms, potatoes). Banana. apple, blueberries. Cup of water.

Dinner- two chicken kebabs, portion of wholegrain rice. Two cans of Holsten Pils (this is extravagant, but it's far less than I used to drink).

Supper - two weetabix. Cup of cinnamon tea.

Is weetabix OK in such quantities?

Hi Popps,
The rest of it looks good, but I would cut down on the Weetabix. Of all the cereals that don't have lashings of sugar added (like Sugar Frosties, Sugar Pops, Coco Pops, etc) Weetabix has just about the highest carb value. Try an oat based breakfast, or better still bacon and eggs. Just scrambled egg on a slice of toast will have only a quarter of the carbs that 2 Weetabix has.

As a late evening snack. have something with protein instead of carbs, like cheese, nuts (not peanuts), ham. These will fill you up without sending your BG soaring - and the added bonus is that they will prevent your liver producing glucose during the night.

Beer does contain quite a lot of carbohydrates - even pils (although that does have less than most others). You might be better off learning to love red wine. The alcohol lowers BG (although be careful if you are at risk of hypos), and the anthocyanins (the red stuff) reduce the risks of heart disease and strokes.

Just to echo about Weetabix, they sent me through thr oof this week. I wnet from 6.2 to 13.2 just on those.

I'm going to try Shredded Wheat tomorrow, and possibly check out some Oat based cereals as they're supposed to be good. I thnk I read Bran Flakes are good, but not checked them yet...

Two weetabix = 30g carbs

One normal size slice of bread = 15g carbs, so scrambled egg on toast would be half the carbs of the weetabix.

Bran flakes - 67g per 100g - to me a portion would be about 40g, which is 27g, so not a lot better than weetabix really.

Shredded Wheat: 2 biscuits - about 30g carbs, so really no difference between the three cereals!

As I just posted on the other thread, I had miscalculated the carb value of Weetabix. So scrambled egg on a slice of wholemeal would only be half the carbs in 2 Weetabix. Still doesn't look good for Weetabix.

I take it then that we are agreed then that the 3 wheat based cereals you mentioned are not good for diabetics, especially type-2s who cannot adjust their meds to compensate for the extra carbs?
