Hi, my brother is a Diabetic Type 1 and has been for about 10 years. He recently decided to become a vegetarian and we are trying to tell him this isn't smart. He isn't a normal diabetic as he is 6 feet 2 inches in height and only 150 pounds in weight. When he was first diagnosed with it the doctor put him on a higher carb diet to put weight on him. Since he became a vegetarian he is losing more and more weight. Is is smart for a diabetic to not eat meat? What is the best diet for a Type 1 on an insulin pump.

If he's still losing weight, I think I'd try to get him to visit the dietician. It's not easy to be a vegetarian diabetic. By the way, Size is irrelevant in T1s. it's only T2s who tend to be heavy for height. Even then it's a bit of a generalisation. I walked today with a leader who is a T2 and slim. since he's just a little taller than me, I'd say he would be medium height.

Hi fairy8, and welcome to the forum.
It's actually not that hard to be a type 1 diabetic vegetarian - I was one for 16 years! All I would say is that it's also very easy to eat too much starchy carbohydrate at the same time.
One recurring theme on the forum is that restricting carbohydrates is the best strategy for long term health and control. This is where being a low-carb type 1 diabetic vegetarian becomes difficult.
Difficut, but not impossible. I'd recommend a recent book by Rose Elliot entitled 'The vegetarian low-carb diet.' That will give you lots of good advice, ideas and recipes too.

All the best,

fergus

Hello fairy8,

My older brother (a type 1, like myself) has been a vegetarian for 10 years. He's never had any
problems with weight or control.

The best diet for a Type 1 on an insulin pump is whatever he fancies eating.

All the best,
timo.
