different bg readings from different fingers

I usually use the same finger as it is the one I get enough blood from. This morning I decided to give it a rest and use a different finger. I didn't test before breakfast but had yoghurt, cream and nuts/seeds (usually have berries but have run out) but 2 hours later my level was 7.4. I retested using the usual finger and the level was 6.1.

Before lunch (ham, cheese, egg, cucumber and mayonnaise - nothing out of the ordinary) my bg level was 5.7. 2 hours later my bg using the different finger was 6.2, using the same finger as usual it was 5.5.

I understand about the variations in readings but should I take any notice of these differences or not. Should I use the same finger if the readings are going to vary or is the difference not that important? Psychologically I prefer 5 to 6/7.

I find that a lot if I test more than once consecutively. Small differences aren't important I don't think, but some of mine are like yours - significantly different. It is worrying. I record all my readings religiously on an Excel sheet and average them out constantly. I never know what to do for the best when recording these re-tests, so I average the 2 numbers and record that! It is very tempting just to record the lower number, but that could be the wrong one! If one of the numbers is way out of what I was expecting I discard it, whether higher or lower and use the one it is more likely to be. Very worrying.

yep and from the same prick you can do several tests and each will be different. the meter and strips have up to a +/-20% error rate.
you take an average over a few days
