Discrepancies between Libre and One Touch Verio

Hi everyone
I'm worried about the differences in numbers between my Libre and my usual glucose monitor. There is usually a 2-3 mmol difference when I check them off each other. will this effect my hba1c when I get one done in 3 weeks?

Morning,

You're going to probably always have discrepancies between your meter and Libre sensor because they work on different principles.

Your Libre measures what's called interstitial fluid and then uses some fancy algorithm to change this to a BGL value in mmol/L. Bear in mind that the interstitial fluid reading is about 15 minutes behind that of your actual blood so this could be a factor as well.

How many sensors have you used? It may be that the next ones will be better. The sensors will get better and better with time.

As for your HbA1c, I'm sure it will be fine. You've probably made enough of an improvement with your average BGL since using the Libre that it would compensate for any exaggeration of high BGL:)

Keep us posted on your A1c and whether you've seen an improvement!

Good luck,
Grant

I see that your BG meter reading is 4 minutes before the Libre (assuming both clocks correct).
As mentioned above the Libre reads 10-15 minutes after BG, so your reading levels could easily be almost 20 minutes apart.
In addition to that almost all meters, Libre included, can be 1mmol or more in error, particularly when over 10mmol/l
So really these two readings can be well within standard level of error.

An error of 10% over a few hours will make a negligible difference to HbA1c comparison some weeks ahead and no meter reading will make any difference to that blood measurement.
What could be different is the estimated A1c level that Libre provides. It's average. I find that sometimes Libre is a little high and sometimes a little low. So the two cancel out for its average.

My last HbA1c blood test was only 1 point different from the Libre estimation - probably fluke!
63 against 64 mol/mol or 7.9% against 8%; 10.1mg against 10.2.
Meaningless differences!

Different strips or different strip meters will give far greater differences in my experience.

Thanks for the replies!
@Bill_St how did you get the hba1c estimation from the Libre? According to my average over the last 2 weeks it's 10 (obviously too high) but it would have been that all month and my last a1c came back 2 weeks ago at 59 (7.5%) looked up a chart and it estimated 8% if your average glucose is 10. was there a certain way you worked out your estimation?

The FreeStyle Libre software provides a Snapshot page with Average Glucose, Estimated A1c in % and mmol/mol (but note only after more than 6 days readings). It seems to be more accurate compared to the blood test if a number of weeks are included in the report - as I would expect - but is useful in giving an estimate for only 1 week.
