Hi

I have looked at several pages online and im just getting more confused so hopefully someone here can help me. Today I received a letter saying I would be getting DLA for my T1 age 11 Son, I am currently claiming income support, do I now claim for carers allowance and stop receiving income support or do I still receive some income support for my younger Son? I dont want to end up worse off :?

Thanks

You will need to speak to the Dept for Work & Pensions and get advised. I haven't worked there for about 10 years but as your son is to receive DLA you should get a disability premium added to your Income Support but this only applies if you are not receiving invalid care allowance, or it used to. The advantage to Invalid Care Allowance is that it gives a National Insurance credit which counts towards any benefits that are NI based such as Retirement Pension.

Alternatively a benefits adviser at Citizens Advice may be able to advise you to claim the correct benefits for your situation.

Just to clear up any confusion, invalid care allowance is now called carers' allowance.

Thanks have made appointment with my personal adviser but its not for a fortnight, be good tho to get everything sorted out

if youre son is on the middle or high level of care then u should be able to get carers allowance, they do knock a bit off income support but its made up of something else so generally u will still be a fair bit better off hope this helps

Hi Shazza,
I also claim for my T1 son, congratulations for getting it so quickly, your one of the lucky ones, it took me two appeals and 18months! DLA is not means tested, but i think the careers is, as you can only work up to 16 1/2 hrs per week or up to £98.26 per week, so your income support may get reduced. One thing for certain, if your son is getting medium or high care componant then you will automatically get the careers allowence granted.
Good luck,
Suzi x

Hi
Yes you will get carers allowance if you apply, only if he gets the middle rate of the allowance, however this is a means tested benefit, therefore it will be deducted from your income support, however you will receive a disability premium on your benefit so it is worth while applying. If you return to work in the near future you can still claim carers allowance but only if you don't earn any more than £95 per week after expenses, there are more other things you can claim for including holidays, toys and computer equipment if you are eligible through the Family Fund Trust , this is for families who have a child on the DLA [Either component] you do need to be referred by a social worker or GP to claim this. I hope this helps.

Hi Suzi 18 months thats ridiculous, they told me 2 months but I heard back in a few weeks, must depend where you live.

Hi kay thanks for the advice I will have a look into the family trust fund as well

Raise Carers Allowance To Minimum Wage Level Campaign

As a disabled person whose parent carer claims Carer’s Allowance, I know others in the same situation. Our parents all had talents and careers before becoming our carers. They did not choose their caring roles- any more than we chose our disabilities.
Carers are all people, too. Many of them have intelligence and skills that can and should allow them to earn far more than £95 a week. By caring for us in our own homes, they are saving our hospitals and residential care homes a lot of money, time and trouble-as well as giving us a good quality of life- a life spent with family and friends in a familiar environment. They rarely complain, yet they are allowed to earn just under £150 a week for all their hard work- and that includes the benefit. Most of them rarely get a break.
p.s so sign this petition to help all carers get the respect support they deserve also could you please consider putting this link on the home page of your website support like yours is desperately needed

If we can get more then 100,000 votes then the house of commons has to debate the subject
SO LETS HELP THE FORGOTTEN HERO'S

You can actually earn a whole £100 a week net now, plus carers of £58 odd. I know, I care for both parents. I have pestered my MP and the House of Commons to no avail. They don't get it at all. That is just 10 hours a week work for me yet there are 168 hours in a week, with an obligation to be caring for 35 hours or more.

They don't care, I mean they get hundreds of pounds a day in allowances, how will they ever understand an income limited to under £160 a week?
