Today I have attended a DLA appeal hearing for my 14year old who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 8 years ago, this has been stopped as they said she can look after herself . Although my daughter still requires help in terms of her care management I still need to do her injections check her during the night incase of hypos . Prepare food and carb and insulin count and constantly review her blood sugars to ensure they stay on track .Need to take her hospital for appointments , eye clinics ,foot clinics and so on . Has anyone experienced this and do you have any advice in taking this forward as they were presented with letters from hospital saying coping with this disease is well beyond her years

Hi, I'm afraid we don't know much about your daughter. Does she have any issues which mean you need to do her injections, blood tests in the night, etc?
Under normal circumstances, it's unusual for a hospital to issue a letter saying coping at 14 is well beyond her years. There are many examples of younger children managing this, so it would help us in offering advice if you could expand a little more.
With regard to clinic attendance, if she is going to the normal number of clinics, I'm afraid that is just part of being a parent.

At 14 your daughter should be more than capable of sorting out hypos, unless hypo unaware. If Hypo unaware then you should have made double sure you explained this.
At 14 years of age she should be carb counting herself. How does she manage when out with friends. If she can't inject then the hospital needs to be involved so that she can.
All parents prepare food for their children so no different than a non diabetic child.

You need to get a statement of reasons and see if any legal reason to overturn the decision. Go to CAB and see if it's possible to send in another claim which might be a better option.
If you look on the diabetes uk site you will find hints and tips on how to fill in DLA forms. Please note this forum is not diabetes uk :)
