Anonymous question submitted:

I have diet controlled diabetes (no medication) and am trying to conceive. I thought that I would need a higher level of folic acid but on asking my doctor he says not. Is he correct and higher levels of folic acid are only required if on medication or is he incorrect and I should be taking a higher level? Thanks.

Please, please go back and see a different GP if you have to. You are totally right. As far as I know you need to be taking folic acid at least 3 months before you conceive. I don't want to frighten you but I had a stillborn child 40 odd years ago. She had Spinal Bifida. They have since found out that folic acid helps to avoid this. A weird thing when I had my youngest son 7 years afterward, I was hooked on eating jars of sweet pickled Beetroot. And what does Beetroot contain (folic acid). My son thankfully was born totally normal. So please go back.
