Hi it's my first day of LCHF today and I know to stay away from starchy carbs but just looking on the packs of the frozen veg I'm having for tea and there's carbs in them,do I need to either count these carbs into my daily amount or should I only have them occasionally? I'm having cabbage, green beans, cauli and broccoli....thought I understood what to do but obviously not lol

I count them, but then again I eat a significant amount of veg, and it all adds up ! And I'm Type 1 so it does make a difference.

Others may differ ..

Good luck ! It sounds like you are starting out well

Most everything contains carb but in veg they are different & have far less impact on your glucose level as they basically slow release.
It's the underground veg that are bad as starch is their content but orange coloured undergrounds are slightly better.

I just eat my veggies , portion control ...type 2 vegetarian

I do weigh and count them now, but I didn't until I had been low carbing for quite some time.

Have a look at Myfitnesspal it helps keep track of those carbs. I have been using the app for 10 days and has helped me get my carbs.

At one point I even counted carbs in lettuce, peppers, onions etc.
I always low carbed however it wasn't until I got my pump that I wanted to be exact as 30 years ago I was told " no need to worry about veg or salads".

After doing a couple weigh ins for foods you don't need to actually get scales or anthing iut again as you will have more of an idea how many carbs there are.

I would definitely say yes to counting carbs in veg (and salads). It really does give you a very good clue on exactly what amount you are eating.

It doesn't matter what type of siabetes you have. The more precise knowlege if carbs you have the better for you it is.

Ok thanks for your help. I've already eaten my dinner and didn't weigh the veg so I have no idea how many carbs I had with them. To be honest apart from the Brazil nuts I've eaten I haven't even looked at carbs on the other stuff (prawn cocktail with salad,2 egg cheese omelette, beef that went with the veg and full fat milk in my coffee) I stupidly assumed that as long as I stayed away from starchy carbs and sugars that I could eat the other stuff in moderation....guess I need to go and read about LCHF again!

It depends how you as the individual wants to base your eating lifestyle. Personally, I have to be exact as I possibly can... But that's me...your food choices sound great!!

Veg like cauli, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, greens..I dont count as to do so would make me go low if I used insulin. Peas, carrots, onions, peppers etc I do. Everyone is different so some will need to count and inject insulin and some wont. It depends on what happens to bg levels

I use the app 'carbs and cals' it shows quantity of food on a plate (portion size) and the number of associated carbs. Thus avoiding the need to weigh food

I tend to be anal with counting carbs. Definitely I would be counting the carbs in vegetables in fact the majority of the carbs I consume are indeed from vegetables. You mentioned you had also eaten prawn cocktail, whilst prawns themselves are pretty zero on the carb front, the sauce is not. The last one I consumed had 6.4g of carb in it . Just to prove I am anal I would also count the carbs you also consumed in your whole milk. Whole milk is the way to go, as the fat slows the absorption of carbs, but they are still there I'm afraid.

@*bel*74 I counted veg for a while on Myfitnesspal to check I was in the ball park, but now I don't count them. I usually only eat veg at my evening meal so am naturally controlling consumption I guess. I just avoid all the major carbs and eat to my meter. I know from my meter not to eat carrots and butternut squash, for example, as they send my bg up higher than I am comfortable with. Other people are ok with them.

It all sounds a bit confusing think I may have to 're-think my eating plan as one of the reasons I thought LCHF would be good for me other than bringing my bg down and the weight loss was that it seemed quite straight forward, like I've already said I assumed as long as I stayed away from starchy carbs and sugars that I could eat everything else in moderation and not have to be calculating everything I eat. Thanks for all your help,it's very much appreciated!

As above. I'm "picture retentive" so the photos in the book of different amounts of food and their carb content are easy for me to remember. Words are more tricky.

I think you have a good idea of what to do already If you avoid starchy veg and underground veg (along with major carbs), you will be on the right track. I don't think it is easy to over consume vegetables as they are bulky and contain fibre. Unless you are eating buckets of the stuff in one sitting, you should be fine.

I use this site as a rough guide to my own way of eating. http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf. The doctor says to eat all you like of those veg listed. My only disclaimer would be to test your bg 2 hours after eating to check you are ok. Once you know what you can eat, you can be less rigorous with your testing. (This all assumes that you are not injecting insulin)
