I was concerned about my little boy so did a couple of fasting tests on him that came out at 7.1 and 7.4 I took him to the docs as from what I have read this is higher than should be but got treated like neurotic mother, questioned why I was testing him and was told anything up to 11 was acceptable. Is this advice correct?
No, it is not correct. The level of 11 is after a test taken 2 hours after a special glucose drink. Fasting is quite different and can vary depending on several circumstances. Why are you worried about your little boy (other than those 2 fasting tests?)
He drinks for England (10-15 150ml drinks a day) to which doc replied 'well it is hot' plus lots of wees. Plus his behaviour is very erratic (don't know if this is a symptom but made me think something wasn't right!) He is also being investigated for balance issues
Take him to another dr those 2 fasting tests you took warrent further investigation through lab blood tests because your meter could be wrong.. You can get fluid to check it or check it against the dr home meter, most have one on the desk
Under 5.5 is normal before breakfast
It talks about ranges that are more generous than for adults, but I honestly know too little about childhood diabetes to make any further comment. I hope a parent might come along with greater wisdom than I can summon.
To be honest, I know absolutely nothing about paediatric diabetes, so won't offer any wisdom I don't have. There is an area on here for parents. You could pose a question on there to try and flush out a parent? http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/parents.16/
Just an edit to add that i thought my earlier post had failed, hence the repeat. I haven't completely lost it,........................ yet.
Fasting tests are best avoided as they can be misleading. Anything between 5 to 7 can be considered 'normal'. Do some tests 2 hours after a typical meal and if over 8.5 then diabetes becomes possible. BTW, balance problems are not typical of diabetes. Drinking a lot can be but the frequency of peeing is a better guide.
