Hi everyone.

Just had the annual blood test results phone call from the doctor. All good apart from elevated cholesterol and advising statins.

I most likely will decline but I'd like to know what you guys would do in my shoes.

I'm 43 in good health, fit and active with a tiny bit of stable BG retinopathy. Type 1 for 23 years. Hba1c of 55.

Total cholesterol 6.3
HD 1.5
LD 4.8

Cheers.

I've just had the statins chat with my doctor.

'Your cholesterol is a little high at 5.2 total, would you like statins?'
'No thank you'
'Are you sure'
'Yes, I've read several sources/studies that suggest they aren't a good idea. Would you like to see them?' (I reach for my bag containing the printouts )
'No, that's fine'

My medical records now read that I am adamant that I don't want statins. My so called QRisk score is 34% (was 44% 10-14 years ago when I was under the care of a cardiologist who never once mentioned statins)

Your HDL is good. The LDL figure is meaningless unless you know what your triglycerides figure is...and they don't usually measure this nowadays.

Was it a fasting test? Again, they don't tell you to fast anymore, but I always do as the test is meaningless if you don't fast.

I am always asked about taking statins, the answer is always no. I have not asked for the print out for my blood results as yet. need to, to find out the ratio of my cholesterol and trigs.

Thanks for your replies. No, I wasn't told to fast. My GP asked me to have a I think it but the answer will be 'no thanks' ...... until next year, when I'll have another think about how to say no thanks again.

I always refuse statins. I eat full-fat cheese and butter from grass-fed cows. In September my total cholesterol was 6.1 but beneficial HDL cholesterol was.2.29 (a bit worse than in June). As long as my HDL cholesterol stays good, I am content. I think that it was Dr Malcolm Kendrick's book that explained reasons not to take statins.
