PLEASE HELP?????

Hi,

I HAVE BEEN TYPE 2 DIABETIC FOR 6 MONTHS

FEB 14 2011 HBA1 TEST AT 8.1 ONE WEEK LATER GLUCOSE TEST 8.7 THEN 2 HOURS LATER 18.1
MAR 2011 HBA1 TEST AT 7.7
JULY 2011 HBA1 TEST AT 6.7 ONE WEEK LATER GLUCOSE TEST 4.8 THEN 2 HOURS LATER 9.4

I WAS PUT ON METFORMIN BY MY FIRST DOCTOR BUT HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY SINCE DAIGNOSED.

I AM ON DIET ONLY.

ON LAST RESULT I MET WITH TWO DIFFERENT DOCTORS ON TWO OCCASIONS BOTH OF WHOM TOLD ME NOT TO TAKE THE TABLETS ON THE JULY RESULTS.
THE SECOND DOCTOR SAID THAT I HAVE A IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE AND AM PRE DIABETIC??

SO WHERE DO I STAND NOW??? :? HAVING SEEN THREE DIFFERENT DOCTORS.

CAN ANYONE GIVE THEIR VIEWS ON THIS

Always difficult answering these where we may disagree with a doctor! The original HbA1c test result was NOT a pre-diabetic result based on all the guidance on these matters, it's a diabetic result. However, you're now obviously doing things to improve your blood sugar levels, presumably diet and exercise, and getting great results so well done. Personally, I'd resist the Metformin and try to improve even further on your already good results by carrying on the good work you're doing. I was about the same as you with my first test, I'm not on medication, and I've got down to below 6 now. But your doctor knows your specific circumstances so we can't just say "don't take the meds", I can only say what I'd do.

My theory on this is, even if you're not diabetic now you soon will be, so you might as well behave as if you are. That's how I've treated my own diagnosis.

I'm on metformin (1 x 500mg 3 times daily). I have a lot of weight to lose and it helps with that. It also has protective effects re CHD, stroke etc, and I'd rather take metformin than statins. But that's just my opinion. I follow a low carb diet 'cos it suits me. I have mobility problems and can't exercise much.

Read around, here and elsewhere, and make up your own mind. You could have a good talk with the doctor you like best - the one that treats you as an intelligent human being!

Don't forget that Metformin is much more effective for much longer when it is started early.
It improves the way the body takes up the sugar and can help delay total shut down of the pancreas.
My last A1c was 5.3%,I still take Metformin in a low dose.
