Does my toddler have diabetes?

Hi there

My 2 year old has had excessive urination and thirst and fatigue for the past 2 weeks. I took him to the doctor who did a urine test and it did not find any glucose or ketones in his urine at all. He has prescribed me some glucose test strips to use randomly to check his urine.

Would this urine test be conclusive or should I insist on a blood test? I guess I just dont trust GP's very much. He seems to think I have nothing to worry about. Please any advice.

Hi there,

I think I would insist on a fasting blood glucose test. When I took my daughter to the GP, displaying very similar symptoms to your son, she did a urine test that showed glucose but no ketones, and then immediately arranged for a fasting blood glucose test early the next morning before school. Her reading from that was 10 and the GP then referred us to the hospital straight away.

It is possible that your child's urine was quite diluted at the time the GP did a test or that his pancreas is still sometimes producing insulin, but not consistently. I would definitely take this further.
Good luck!
Sue
