I'm usually on 34 units of glargine every night, but due to high readings a few days ago I increased to 36. How ever this have left me feeling ravenous all the time :? does this happen to anyone else or does anyone know why this happens?

Any replies will be greatly appreciated thanks

Hi Catfish 185,
Yes it can. Well it did in my case, and having looked back in a diary that I kept while I was on it, my hunger and all the other side-effects where at their peak when I was on larger doses. Of course I didn't realise at the time, but the reason I was having to take more and more Lantus was because it just wasn't working! Nothing to do with me, my diet or activity.
If you have any other problems you think might be associated with this medication, I would urge you to speak to your DSN about trying an alternative.

Hi,

funnily enough this hasn't occured to me until i read your post!

Before moving onto an insulin pump i used glargine (lantus)

Now i think about it, i eat far less than i used to! Mind you high BG's can make you extremely hungry too.

As janabelle mentions there are alternatives to lantus and if you experience side affects that can arise in using any medication then speak to your diabetes specialist to explore the option of trying a different one.

I used to be on Lantus/Glargine and found that after a few years I seemed to tolerate it less and less.

I certainly didn't feel that it had a full 24 hour action; and would get fairly random results on it. Speak to your GP about changing to another long acting insulin; I'm on Levemir (on a split dose) which seems to be doing the trick.

The thing with insulin is that the more you have sloshing about in your blood the hungrier you will get (and also more glucose will be turned to fat).
