I’m really new to all this stuff and committed to low carb last Tuesday following a T2 diagnosis and suspected neuropathy.

There is a lot to take in and learn (trying to do so quickly) and there is a big thing I don’t get in relation to my readings.
Here goes:
11th Dec fasting reading at hospital 6.3.
GP said I needed a GTT. Got myself to hospital again and readings were:
6.1 rising to 12.2 at the 2 hours.
GP said I was diabetic.

Have just got my HbA1c reading taken last Thursday. This is 5.2%.

A different GP told the receptionist to tell me the result is normal and NHS is only concerned if it is above 7. So big Q is “Am I diabetic, or not?????”
I have got another session with the practice nurse next week at which point I will get a meter so can take readings pre-food and post food. Is that the only way to find out the truth? And what questions should I ask?

Hope someone can help this newbie make sense of what these numbers and advice means. Feel like my head will explode with it all!

Hello justfoundout,

The good news is that a HbA1C of 5.2% is within the normal range of 3.5-5.5%. This suggests that your blood sugars haven't been running permanently high or spiking excessively high on a day-to-day basis.

The not so good news is that a 6.3 mmol/l fasting result is considered "impaired fasting glycaemia".

As for your oral glucose tolerance test, I'm afraid that any reading above 11.1 will usually be taken as confirmation of diabetes (Normal range is sub 7.8 mmol/l at +2 hours).

Getting hold of a test meter from your practice nurse will give you and your doctor a better idea of how your body is handling your regular diet.

Good luck,
timo.

you just found out that in most cases, Diabetes is controllable at normal BG levels.
My lates HbA1c was 5.1% and I most definitely have it, but work hard to control it.
