Type 1 Doubt about bodybuilding diet and diabetes

In terms of bodybuilding, I can't comment as my weight lifting is restricted to resistance training for about 4 hours a week, just to ensure I am strong, as good muscles help to use up and burn off any glucose/sugar I take in or generate.

My guess would be that taking what I do to another level would also help with blood sugar control, but any advice would depend on the type of diabetes, level and type of medication you are given, if any.

For diabetes in general, many members of this community, myself included, use a LCHF (low carb, high fat) diet.

Whilst we opt for low carb (I am in just 20g per day) and high fat, the protein part should still be moderate, say 1g per kilo of body weight.

You never know we may get some people to make suggestions who also have experience of body building

Hi. Views amongst the medics seem to vary on high protein and the kidneys. Certainly if your kidneys have a problem the protein should be limited, but otherwise no one provides a clear opinion. Fat is fine for the kidneys.

There is a group on facebook called type 1 diabetic athletes. It's a very active group and I'm sure there are body builders who low carb who are active on there. I would recommend finding the group and sending a message to the admins to ask to join.

I've spent the last couple of years doing resistance training and dependent on the phase, have engaged in very high protein diets as part of that. My eGFR and Creatinine levels have remained healthy. The key issues are whether your kidneys were okay before you started and sadly, just luck.

There is a fair amount of research that appears to show that eating high quantities of protein is fine for reasonably short periods of time and where your kidney function is good, and your blood glucose is maintained at a close to normal level, ie Hba1C at 6.5% or better.

What has tended to show up in research is that those with higher blood glucose levels suffer from kidney issues anyway and eating large amounts of protein can exacerbate this.

If you are going to undertake a high protein diet in relation to bodybuilding I would buy urine strips to check for proteinuria and also get your eGFR, ACR and Creatinine levels checked three monthly.

You'll have to make that call. A large part of t1 is taking control and managing things yourself and making these decisions with the assistance of others.
