Dear Friends,
My Mum is Type 2 Diabetics person, she has been on Insulin since 1 year, 3 injections a day (Lantus).
Before she starts she was 45 Kilos, now she is 95 Kilos, since she has started those Injections, she has considerably put on weight, and that is not helping a lame leg.

I would like to know if anybody had experienced the same problem, and why is she putting on weight, even the Doctors do not understand why?
I am her daughter and I am confused and lost.
Any advoces would be more than welcome.
Thank you to all
God Bless you
Shama

Hi shama. Insulin can, unfortunately, make you put on weight. The more insulin you use the more likely to put weight on. Having said that, it sounds like she has put on a lot of weight and I would be very surprised if this all down to insulin. Has she had her thyroid tested? Or any other tests?

Emma x

HI Shama,
I agree with Emma the more insulin you have to take the more weight you gain, Have the doctors ever tested her thyroid.
Is your mother well controlled.
If the doctors haven't done any further tests if not is it possible for you to attend the doctors with her (you probably do any way) but you could request a thyroid test.
Hope she will be ok.
Please keep in touch if you want.
Hope all goes well.
Take care
Tracey

Hello

If your mum is injecting Lantus insulin 3 times a day then the weight gain problem will be due to Lantus unfortunately. Lantus is known for causing weight gain in some people due to its growth factor so it will be worth talking to your mum's diabetic specialist for a change in insulin regime.

It seems quite odd to be using Lantus 3 times a day. It is normally used once a day as a background insulin and some people need to split the dose and use it twice but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone else taking it 3X a day. I think this is something to be discussed .

I know of a person who comes under the type 2 heading and injects Lantus 4 times a day so bg levels can be controlled in different ways.

Yes Lanuts does seem to have a more of a reputation for weight gain than Levimer..

Firstly you need to work out what your mums natural weight should be, because unless your mum is rather short, 45kg sounds as though she might have been underweight..

Another thing you do need to sort out, why on earth are they giving your mum 3 injections of Lantus a day?

Splitting Lantus, levimer into 3 injections doesn't work... spitting into two injections when you have coverage problems (either they falling short or you need different amounts for morning and evening) is about it's limit..

Lantus isn't a good splitting insulin, even though it have a flatter profile than Levimer is doesn't split as well.. Levimer is much better at this..

Sounds as though you'll need to ask some questions..

Another place to look at is your mums eating habits, has this changed at all since she's been on insulin...

Hello Friends,

Thank you for all your replies.
It did help me, and I know now which questions I will be asking her doctor back home.
I will let you know.
All the best and thank you for your time
