Hi everyone, I’m still new to this, just diagnosed with T2 in May. It’s been all about the food so far but I’m noticing that my skin is becoming very dry. I’ve always had a good cleanse, tone and moisturise routine but am now finding that my usual products just aren’t doing the job. Is this just me or is this a side effect and if so any recommendations for products would be welcome!

Hello, and welcome, @Ambermac
Are you on any diabetes meds?
I do have dry skin, but have since childhood. So probably not due to T2. Similar age to you, though, and have noticed post menopause need more moisturising.
Always use moisturiser with SPF of at least 15 on face. Tend to buy cheaper brands as more expensive ones have more ingredients and perfumes which make me itch. Use SPF 50 sunscreen on exposed skin, even in winter, and emollients instead of soap.
Not sure if my experience helps you, but hope others will chip in with ideas.

Hi Ambermac, welcome to the forum :)

I am also in the same (kind of) age range, maybe a tad older ;) and my skin seemed to get dryer about 14 years ago, I've been diagnosed about 12/13 years with T2D so maybe there is a link. But maybe it's also to do with our age, regardless I'd say try a new moisturiser as I found out that our skin does tend to get too used to the same old, same old and it doesn't work as well. I changed mine in my 50's then again in my mid 60's now I'm 72 I have 2 types of cleansers and moisturisers in my cabinet and I alternate them each month. Same goes for body moisturisers too.

Additionally, eating a sensible amount of fats (butter, olive oil, fat on meat, oily fish) may help you. It helps me, and also I take 2 cod liver oil capsules each day.

Maybe age and type 2. I have on an off in the last year or so had contact dermatitis on various parts of my body but not hands. Being a hairdresser you would think it would be the first place but no never! I have had to be very careful of toners, moisturisers etc on my face as it can get very aggravated and that goes for shower gels etc too. Think its more an age thing for me as I used to be able to chuck anything and everything on myself with no worries, sleep with the same make up on after a heavy night clubbing and just roll out of bed the following morning and to work a shift of perming etc! Now I am more sedate in some respects I just wish my skin was :banghead:

I am the most dried up husk I’m T2 since 2018. I SWEAR BY Nivea Soft for everything. Hands, feet, body, face, lips.. I’d be horrific without Nivea Soft by the bucket

Thank you so much for the feedback, it’s good to know that I’m not on my own in this. I know it’s a small thing but I was completely unaware of the symptoms and side effects of diabetes until I was diagnosed, it’s been a bit of a crash course!

Thank you SarahPlum! For years I’ve been a devotee of expensive brands where beauty items were concerned but when I read your post I decided to try your Nivea Soft. What can I say, it was a revelation and I couldn’t believe how something so inexpensive turned out to be so effective. We live and learn

Are your blood sugars controlled now? As I had dry skin and scalp before I was diagnosed

I think so OB87, but I was only diagnosed in May and was put on Statins for cholesterol level and told to concentrate on losing weight. I was 14st 7lb and am now 11st 5lb, I’m getting my first follow up health check on Monday so am hoping there will be an improvement but I’m totally in the dark as to some of the things discussed here, hopefully I’ll gain more knowledge as I progress, it’s a very steep learning curve!

Brilliant news!!!

If diabetes affects all our body cells then presumably it will affect our skin as well.
