Driving a Van

Yes. You can drive anything up to 3 1/2 tonnes. If you want to drive heavier up to 7 tonnes you have to have a medical and jump through a few hoops to get it, like your consultant seeing at least 3 months worth of BS readings (self testing ones), but it is not so hard to do.

But yes, a standard Transit van under 3 1/2 tonnes is covered by your ordinary licence. Nothing changes on your licence except the withdrawal of the 'over 3 1/2 tonne' bit and the fact it has to be renewed every three years. And that is free to do by the way.

ps: when I wrote that above, I hadn't noticed that you are an old hand at diabetes, not newly diagnosed, so I'm sorry if you thought I was treating you like a newbie.

Driving a transits fine but do make your employer/insurance company aware of your diabetes, I have a 3 year license and it does specify on the license what vehicles you can drive.

Probably best to check the entitlements on your license to be certain.
I just double checked mine, since I was under the impression I couldnt drive a transit, and I only have Categories: A, B, BE, fklnp.

But checking http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Dr ... DG_4022547 Class B would cover a transit as long as its weight is less than 3.5 Tons (as Margi mentions) and it has no more than 8 passenger seats.

So a transit fitted out as a minibus is possibly a no.

If you are going for the 7.5 ton entitlements being put back on your licence then one of the hoops you have to jump through is you have to reapply every 12 months and not every 3 years.

Minibus I don't think you would be entitled to drive but I am probably wrong.
