If you don't return it without good reason they are fully entitled to REVOKE your licence. As it is only a bit of plastic/paper it is what is on record at the DVLA that is important.  If you were ever stopped or had an accident you would be in serious trouble as you would, if it was revoked, have No Driving Licence.
