driving with type 2 diabetes

I have type 2 diabetes which is sucessfully controlled with tablets. I have over the last few months been trying to find out what the law states with regard to informing both the dvla and the insurance companies but I am totally confused with the conflicting
advice and information I am being given, for instance.

The DVLA on there website state that you do not need to inform them if your diabetes is controlled by tablets and you do not need to test before driving and during the journey unless your on insulin.

My diabetic nurse says that I do have to by law test myself because I take gliclazide tablets even though I have never suffered from hypo.

My insurance companies application form asks if I have aaany DVLA reported medical conditions (which I dont have)

Now the video on this website states that you do need to by law inform the DVLA if you have diabetes however it is treated.

In desperation I contacted my MP and have now received a letter from the minister of transport signed by the under secretary of state Stephen Hammond stating that blood glucose monitoring only applies to drivers whose diabetes is treated with insulin.

Can anybody help? what are the requirements and what is the law.
 
The reply from the minister of transport is correct, you only need to advise the dvla if you take insulin. If only on tablets you do not need to advise them nor the insurance company. Once on insulin it's a 3 yr driving licence renewable providing no complications.
 
Hi. Note that when you renew your annual car tax online I think it asks if you have diabetes so you can inform them that way anyway.

Sorry but you have to inform the DVLA if you take medication that can induce a diabetic hypo... So Gliz's are included in this because they stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin, and if the diabetic using them levels become low, they like an insulin user can end up in a serious medical emergency if they fail to treat said slow blood glucose..

As to your insurance company, you do need to tell them as well...

It won't make any difference to your insurance policy, but to with hold the information you can bet your bottom dollar, that if you have an accident, they find out you'll diabetic they will hold it against you..
 
According to the GOV website you only need to inform the DVLA if you have complications, such as more than one episode of severe hypo, if your diabetes is controlled by drugs.

So if you are free of complications you dont need to tell them. I am on Glic and Met and I called the DVLA (I am learning to drive at the moment so leave nothing to chance) and they said it doesnt need to be notified.

I told my insurance company and it hasn't made a difference to that either.
