I do not have diabetes
My father was ill in February and is now having to use insulin and has sent his forms off to the DVLA - does he have to wait for their approval before he can drive again?

He can continue to drive a car until DVLA deal with paperwork. As long as he remains hypo aware and no serious hypo's ( that need 3rd party assistance ) his license should be renewed for 3 years. Make sure you let ins know too. They are not allowed to increase premiums due to diabetes.

Thank you for the response. He has not had any hypos but is aware of the signs. He has written to his insurance company too. Really grateful as he is keen to drive again.

What Mo has said is quite right, I've been waiting for 5 weeks for my licence to return so rang the DVLA last week, they say whilst the Medical Dept are dealing with the forms you are allowed to drive under your current licence as long as you haven't been told otherwise, they said (as my licence runs out next month) that if I don't get word back before my licence expires I would still be able to drive under Section 82 (?) so do not need to worry.

If your concerned give the DVLA a ring, in my own experience I find them fine to talk to and always helpful.
