Drugs Don't Work

Hi. How old are you and are you near normal weight? If you are quite young and normal weight then your diagnosis might actually be Late onset T1 and not T2. If you are overweight then T2 is more likely through insulin resistance. Metformin will not have much effect on blood sugar even at max dose but most of us are on it as it helps a bit and does help with insulin resistance. Vidaglitpin is one of the Gliptin group. I was on Sitagliptin before I went onto insulin. I was also on Gliclazide before insulin and it is often prescribed to stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. It can be useful if you are normal weight and your pancreas in not A1. It might be worth including this in your GP discussions. If you are possibly a Late Onset T1 then I'm afraid insulin will be not far away but don't panic. I've been on it for 6 months and it is not the problem I though it might be. You may only need to inject twice day (one of them probably at bedtime) and the modern pens are simple. I use 4mm long needles which are painless; the meter lancets are worse. Insulin gives you total control. BTW, you need to control your carb intake regardless of your diagnosis so do keep you carb intake down and low-GI to help bring your blood sugar down. I would definately suggest lowering your carb intake and upping your exercise This can have a very good effect of lowering BGs

Hi. Sounds like T2 but you are taking the right approach in controlling the carbs. If the sugars still stay too high then do discuss adding something like Gliclazide with the GP; it may or may not work for you. It did work a bit for me to start with but failed in the end so I went onto insulin. Let's hope your continued weight reduction helps with the sugars with perhaps upping the meds a bit. BTW was the Activia Yogurt free of added sugar? Most yogurts are drowning in sugar. I have Irish Yogurts Fruit Diet yogurts with only the natural sugar of the fruit and sweeteners.

Januvia and Gliclazide do nothing whatsoever for me, my level before bed now stands at 27.8 and fasting is around 9.8, i have followed a low carb diet and have lost 20 pounds in around 6 months but level will not come down

Hi Stillo. When Januvia and Gliclazide stopped working for me and my HBa1C finally rose to 8.3% I was put onto insulin and I wouldn't go back now as I have full control. I think you may need to discuss insulin with the GP if your HBa1C is above 7.5%. There are other injectables if you are still noticeably overweight with insulin resistance.

I am excessively overweight unfortunately we have lost our Dn and we have to rely an a GP who has no clue whatsoever, i was referred to the diabetes clinic in Leeds but they refused to see me because my GP told them i was taking insulin , i told them i have never had insulin but they told me i need to be re referred by my GP, i will not be going back until i need my next Hba1c as i no longer have any faith in the medical field at all.

Just one other thing i was at my Dr Last week complaining of open sores on my big toes quite simply because i have been told to keep an eye on my feet, these sores are weeping clear liquid and are extremely sore, my GP told me to change my shoes because she thought they were rubbing my Skin off

When I was first diagnosed I had very high readings, I am on Gliclazide and its only in the last 3 weeks that I have started to experience a decent improvement.

H i type 2 & on metformin 2000mg & 40mg gliclizide lower sugars for now but you have to keep a check on sugars as with gliclizide they can make sugars low sometimes.hope they sort you out.good luck

worried about your feet. With sugars that high, those feet need looking at. What's your local pharmacist like? Sometimes they can be brilliant. It's really important those feet don't get infected. Stress can send your sugars up too, and I'm bit worried you are eating so little. Just 1 yoghurt all day? Maybe you could look at Dr Bernstein's book about diabetes. He was the guy at the forefront of encouraging regular blood sugar testing. He is all over the internet too. His book is a good one if you are interested in going low carb (though there are a few good one's around, but this is diabetes specific).
Gosh, sorry to sound like a nagging mum, but you need to be well fed, not fasting, till your sugars are more stable and please please get those feet looked at. They shouldn't be weeping lymph. Your doctor's response worries me.

being diabetic you do have to keep watch on toes & feet i have had trouble for over a year now i stuggled from last august with bad toe then december it was removed, t have just got my other toes healed but had to keep of my feet, now i have cut my foot open nurse this morning b ut will not be allowed to put weight on it the podiatrist liked you with your feet up.
slightest sores i have to ring my surgery go for dressings every other day. as your toe been cleaned & wrapped up & any sign of infection striaght onto antibiotics. hope this as been some help to you destiny

I have an appointment with my Gp in 30 minutes at the request of my Optician,4 weeks ago i had my eyes tested and i needed new lenses in my glasses within 2 day's of the new lenses i was having problems seeing i went back to the optician and they retested me and my sight had changed,so more new lenses, Monday of this week i could not see again so back to the optician and once again need another lens change, the optician will not put anymore lenses in my glasses as she says it is pointless until i have stabilized my Diabetes as this is affecting my eyesight so i now have a £359 pair of sunglasses that i could have got for £50.00.

Doctors still maintain that i am within NHS guidelines,i am going to ask to see an endocrinologist as the diabetes clinic in Leeds will not see me as they think i am on insulin and i am not, i can feel a serious complaint coming on in the next day or so this has been going on for far too long now

I'd get them sorted now. My eyes seem to vary with levels as well so I got them tested while stable and bought a few pairs of the cheap n cheerful ones from the pound shop in different strengths for those odd times when my vision goes walkabout.

Not too well im afraid,i am being referred to a eye specialist and a Dermatologist i don't think i have ever mentioned on these forums that i have a genetic eye disorder so Dr is concerned that the Diabetes is indeed effecting my eyesight, i have a lesion on my cheek that i have had for over 7 months and the Dr said it should have cleared by now and it hasn't , i have also had an appointment made to see the new diabetic nurse we have on Monday morning so maybe i will get somewhere now, thanks for asking
