Diabetes!
as I have now been told that I cannot take Metoformin due to my kidney function being below 30% (it is 26%) what other drugs can a Type 1 take to help with insulin resistance?

Lorna

The only one I know which is used in type 1's is metformin, has your consultant not suggested anything?

my renal consultant said to discuss it with my DN, who I am seeing next month, he said perhaps it was time I went back to seeing a consultant for my diabetes but I would much rather stick with the nurse at my GP's

My personal preference would be to go back to the care of the hospital team and see the diabetes consultant, the DN's are fine but their knowledge and expertise isn't anywhere near to that of a specialist consultant.

Your renal consultant is right, you need to see the diabetic consultant!

There are several other drugs that deal with insulin resistance, but only the diabetic consultant will know which would be the more suitable one for you,

Acarbose, then you got the thiazolidinediones such as pioglitazone but I don't know enough about them to even hazard a guess whether there are any indicators that may rule them out with kidney problems... I know that they aren't used often due to possible issues with the liver, so need high degree of monitoring!

So best to ask to be referred to the diabetic consultant...

I would think that most aren't. Some develop insulin resistance and the metformin can help counteract this. It can be very helpful when for people whose liver produces too much glucose in the early morning hours.
