Dry Skin

I've had dry skin on my hands for several months now; but in recent weeks it's getting worse.

It is on my knuckles and the bottom of my fingers and in between the fingers.

I've tried E45 cream and also bio oil, but neither seems to help.

Any other suggestions, remedies or old wives tales for me?

Also getting dry hands allot recently due to winter the air has less moisture. I use L'Occitane Verbena Shea Butter Liquid Soap and found a marked inprovement on my skin. Not cheap but worth it and lasts for months.

Also try increasing your water intake aswell and patting your hands dry with a towel not rubbing. Hope it helps.
 
Not got it on my hands, but on my feet, tried e45 and avon hand cream nothing seems to work.

As to hands, you might try oil of olay, my mother always used that and she had lovely soft hands.

We have a 1 year old dog and being a bit of a cleanliness fanatic I tend to wash my hands frequently after every time I come into contact with him. I guess that doesn't help things either, but good point about the liquid soap mehdave. Instead of buying the stuff from the pound shop I guess I should consider splashing out (no pun intended) on a decent liquid soap that will be kinder to my hands.
 
I have credited this foul weather with my dry skin, especially down the sides of my nails. Am lathering hand cream on and wearing gloves more often and generally doing what everyone else is doing. Think it will improve when the sun comes out. Or at least when the temp goes above 1.5 degrees.

I was a lifelong dry skin sufferer and my nails were always split and frayed too. Now I'm really a low carber( I estimate <30carbs per day) I eat more fats, including cream and butter. Even though I'm in the swimming pool at least twice a week, and still use handcream and facecream, my skin is VERY much better.
In the old days when I used E45, I found it made my skin worse. I find baby moisturiser good, but I usually buy a general purpose cream from Lidl. It's pretty cheap, but effective.

yeah the hemp cream at night with cotton gloves or sock is a wonder cleared up my crusty sore feet in less than a week
 
I like Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream. It is quite expensive but very effective and a tube lasts ages as you only need a tiny dab. I prefer the unscented version. Also Aqueous Cream BP from chemists is very cheap and quite effective. I use this before washing up, cleaning etc as a barrier cream.

I've suffered dry elbows for ages, and my sister bought me Avon's Shea Butter foot & elbow cream. It worked wonders on my elbows, I'd tried everything previously. I also use it on my hands at night with gloves. My husband moans that I smell all chocalety, but I love it!

very girly and not cheap but the best cream for hands I have ever used is Clarins Jeneusse (sp?) de Mains, it lasts for ages as a little goes a long, long way and it has totally cleared up all the dry skin I used to get on my index fingers and also helps with the hard skin I get on my finger tips from testing all the live long day :wink:

Unguentum Merc cream is extremely good for dry skin on hands. Available on prescription or can be bought.
Also, Udder cream is good as well (comes from cow's ??? :lol: ). Is available online or from farm shops.

A few years ago, at a county fair we were visiting, I bought a large tub of organic seaweed stuff for my wife who suffers from eczema.

Despite my nagging for some strange reason she never tried it. I dug it out this evening and applied it to my hands and I can see and feel an improvement after only one application.

I can't remember how much I paid for the stuff, but their website is aalgo.com
 
Like Hanadr, I found that my fragile skin got heaps better when I started low-carbing - whether because of better fat levels or better protein levels I don't know. I still get occasional cracks in the winter, but nothing like I used to. The Udder cream is good; as is Neal's Yard Frankincense moisturiser if you can afford it. But for actual cracks, nothing beats Tiger Balm IMHO - you think it is going to sting like crazy but it actually stops the pain in its tracks and makes the skin flexible so it doesn't crack further.

I was told last year by a beauty assistant in a big store that massaging hands with a mixture of oil and salt is good because the skin doesn't crack unless it builds up a thick layer of dead cells which harden. It sounded a bit counter-intuitive, but it does seem to help.
 
I went out and bought the Body Shop Hemp stuff and the Avon Shea stuff after reading about it here, and I've just come back to say I couldn't be better pleased. They're both brilliant, and much better than what I've been using (which, in fairness, was chosen to not be greasy for more than two seconds). I can see why gloves etc are needed but that's okay, I can manage that mostly. The hemp stuff is not cheap though! It had better last a while...

Perfectil tablets from Boots, drinking plenty of water (hydrate from inside), shower not bath, Sanex shower gel, pat skin with towel don't rub, put body lotion of choice on when skin still damp, wear gloves in winter, sunscreen/block in summer and after sun, moisturiser every day.
