DSN's in short supply.

Most type2's are managed at their G.P.'s surgery. There is often an assumption that the Nurse you see there for your diabetes is a DSN.

Read this article and you will see,

"While it is common for G.P. Practice Nurses to manage diabetes patients whose condition is stable, they often lack the in-depth knowledge to take on those patients whose diabetes is more unpredictable or complex....."

I'm surprised that nobody commented about this article.

DSN's in short supply in Hospital settings and those that do work there are being asked to perform general nursing duties, limiting the time available to see diabetic patients.

Is this the start of the health reforms where G.P.'s will be more involved with patient care? Has anyone been referred back to their Dr. from the Hospital Clinics? Are they going to be seen by a General Nurse or Health Care Assistants because these Nursing disciplines are going to be issued with guidelines drawn up by DSN's to help them manage diabetics according to this article.

I think the future care looks far from rosy. :thumbdown:
 
When I was diagnosed Catherine I was placed under the care of a hospital diabetes unit and a DSN, at the same time the unit was being transferred out of the hospital trusts care over the the PCT and it was in this changeover period that I slipped through the net and had to ask them to organise my second HbA1c - they had no details of me - lucky then that I found this forum and took control of my own diabetic destiny

I dont know if other trusts are doing the same thing and carving up the care between the trusts and the PCT's but i did hear someone mention a few days ago that DSN's were not being replaced when vacancies occurred which would seem to fit in with your statement that DSN's are being asked to undertake general nursing duties.

I really did get top advice from my DSN both at diagnosis and afterwards, well after they had found my notes and placed me on their books again. I was only discharged after I came off insulin, but I am really pleased I wasnt under my GP's care when I was placed on insulin as their diabetes knowledge is distinctly lacking.
