Hi,

My mom has just been diagnosed with diabetes - we don’t know which type yet and she is on insulin injections.

She has been told to notify the DVLA which we will do once we find out who her consultant is but does anyone know how long you have to wait until they make their decision and you can drive again?

Having diabetes does not stop you from driving a normal car provided your doctor is happy for you to do so.
Your mother will need to complete the form - an online version is available - which will result in the DVLA issuing a license to be renewed every 3 years.

Hi,

Normally no more than a couple of working weeks for me when I renew..
Infact, I’ve had the letter saying it’s “in hand” drop through the door the same day as the licence.

My understanding is that you can continue driving whilst waiting for the new license provided your doctor is happy for you to do so.
I am not sure how long a new license takes but my last renewal request was done on line and I received a new one within less than a week.

Don't forget to notify your insurers too - it doesn't usually affect your premium, but if you are involved in some type of accident it stops them having a reason to refuse your claim & invalidate your policy
