I have applied to renew my licence and now they have asked me to go to a medical is that with my GP it has his name on the letter advice please I rang them and they said it was ok and asked if I have been told not to drive the answer was no and then told ok the worry this causes is awful One of the consultants told me LADA does not carry the risks also I do not suffer with high blood pressure

Any diabetic should notify the DVLA. Type 1 diabetics usually have their liciences reviewed three yearly. This usually consists of you having a fields test, making sure you haven't suffered any Hypo's ( low sugar). This can be done with your Gp, but usually if you give them the name of your consultants or any other doctor your under they usually just write to them, but make an appointment to have a fields test.
Is your control well maintained?
I had my llicience revoked 2 years ago, but i have had a lot of problems with my sight especially my left eye, but then i have had diabetes for 37yrs this year.
I wasn't well controlled till the last 5 yrs, always thought i could cheat and get away with it, have learnt a big lesson.
Please take note of any advice you get, remember we are not doctors, but as good as, as we have gone through all the stages (especially the older diabetic).
You should be fine, keep in touch. Don't stress yourself as that will up your sugars.

Hi Tracey this is my first renewal as was supplied the three year one as on insulin so thus it is worrying i declared that i have had hypos but not needed medical help when i rang to check on the progress they said would be ok i sent an email saying it would really affect quality of life if i was refused a licence as family live 130 miles away and unuable to travel by public transport due to health issues plus i drive 26 miles to work will i see my gp or do you see theirs
 
by the way I am 63 but feel a spring chicken lol.
I did give them the name of my consultant and have no issues with my eyes as yet i have quite tight as when BG rises that is when Iam unable to drive as feel too ill they are bothered hypos i was married for nearly 24 years and met my then husband in 1966 on his 16th birthday he became diabetic but he never accepted it then when all diabetics were switched overnight to human insulin it was horrendous he always had lots of hypos so i have seen some awful things think he is not much better now
 
Found out it was something to do with the GP getting something wrong awaiting to hear from GP receptionist they have to contact DVLA
 
The Secretary rang DVLA and tried to cancel the medical but they would not let them the GP filled it in wrongly
 
A bit late now to say, but DVLA doesn't distinguish between diabetes on basis of type (1, 2, LADA, MODY, gestational etc), but on treatment ie diet only / oral medication only / insulin (doesn't seem to recognise injectable medication that is not insulin).

At my pump clinic appointment last week with my diabetic consultant who is a professor, he told me the BMA want to take the licence off all type 1 diabetics, i think the current regulations are just the thin end of the wedge and eventually all type 1 will be stopped from driving, another 70,000 on job seekers that’s roughly 50% of type 1 diabetics (just a guess). There is a pump available that self monitors and adjusts itself, if they are going to take our licences in fear of hypos they should give us the right to one of these pumps.

I should of said only if you needed medical help, but how wrong a GP can be when filling in these forms. At least having the tests will prove you are ok to drive.

Had the medical with my GP who said it was stupidity as this is the third time he has filled in the form as usual BP was really good never suffered from high BP just have to wait and see had to de lare I have H ypos at night and in control fingers crossed otherwise I wil have to stop working and will be unable to see my family as they live 130 miles away they hardly ever vist me

You do not have to declare you have hypos at night unless you need 3rd party help.

If you have been asked to go for a medical then you must. I understand that you have to tell your car insurance company that you are diabetic too. They will ask questions of course. It all depends if you are on medication as well or insulin rather than diet controlled only. Try not to worry, be honest about everything and give them your doctor's contact details if necessary.
