Hi Everyone, can anyone tell me when people with diabetes had to let the authorities know that they have diabetes. I have been type 1 for 54 years, if it was on the driving license application form back in 1967 ( when i was 16 ) I would have put it down. I only found out by chance after loosing my driving license while in the USA after 18 years of driving, when I applied for a replacement licence, i filled in that I was diabetic and they went mad.
Also when did it become law to inform insurance companies, I informed my insurance broker back in 1967 and he said it didn't matter, but a few years later found out it did. As i was still with the same inurance I quickly had to find another so that I could drive leagally and not have problems with my old insurance.
Why don't DVLAS inform us about changes to the law concerning diabetes drivers.

That took a bit of finding!
Since 1975 it has been a legal requirement to notify the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Centre in Swansea of the diagnosis of diabetes. The driving licence issued to subjects with diabetes requiring treatment with insulin has been restricted to a maximum period of three years in place of the standard driving licence which is valid until the age of 70 years.
