early diabetes

Hello all my name is Jean and have just been told i have early diabetes thats all i know am very confused at my age to get something like this.I put on lots of weight after i packed up smoking last year first they say its thyroid then bowel problems which i was tested for and have just been cleared thank goodness now its diabetes where do i go from here any advice would be appreciated thanks
 
Welcome to the forum Jean.Home to the diabetically confused and the more calm rational long termers!It's a wake up call and a life change Jean but you can do it!You say you put on weight well that has to go,easier said that done i know but if you lose even 10% of the weight it will greatly help your diabetes.The life change comes with having to rethink the way you eat and exercise.Browse through the forum,you will find some great tips and,BTW congratulations on stopping smoking! As a yet to quitter I'm envious that you've managed that.
Once you have read a bit and talked to a diabetic nurse it will start to make sense and I wish you luck in getting to grips with it.

Hello Jeannie and welcome. I have just posted a reply to a young man called Adey whose post is just a couple below yours. He is in pretty much the same position as you and the advice is the same to both of you. To save me repeating it all, have a look at what I said to him.
