I do not have diabetes
Hello all,

I don't want to bore anyone with introductions so I'll get straight to it...

I'm a Caucasian, 21 year old student. 6 feet, 145 pounds (pretty skinny) and in generally good health. Lately I've had extremely frequent urination and the urine is completely clear and odorless. I also have what looks like oral thrush on my tongue and a terrible taste in my mouth. I've been very tired (more so than usual) and I've had some days when I've felt very shaky and weak. When I drink, the hangovers are more miserable than usual and I feel more malnourished and dehydrated than I have in the past. The increasingly bad hangovers and fatigue started last fall and I had episodes where I would become very foggy mentally and have a rapid heart rate and shortness of breath.

All of these symptoms seem like it could possibly be diabetes. However last fall I had blood work done in response to those previously mentioned attacks and my Glucose, serum level was 80 MG/DL. Is this the test for diabetes? If so isn't a diabetic level around 126 MG/DL?

Could it be possible that I was showing the early symptoms last fall and now the frequent urination and thrush have indicated I have developed diabetes? Does it develop this quickly? I'm a study abroad student and I'm leaving the UK in a few days, so I doubt I could make a doctors appointment before I leave but I plan on getting checked as soon as I get back to the US. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to combat these symptoms and prevent any other health effects?

I know my demographic and age doesn't indicate I'd be at a high risk, but my mother has told me I have several family members with diabetes so I immediately thought it was possible. Also, I'm admittedly a hypochondriac so the worry of not knowing and constantly checking symptoms, causes, eye has been driving me crazy for a few days now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hollidja, something may be going on. - I do not think you can go on urine being clear and odorless. (I am a T2 and my urine is clear and odorless). Tiredness is also a typical diabetes sign.

If you have time before you leave, please rush out and buy yourself a glucose meter and strips. This will tell you.

I guess that you will not go abroad without having some internet-access. This is a link which has helped me (and many others as it is always referred to): http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/index.php

I realize that you are in a hurry. But wherever you are going (unless deepest into a third world country), i am sure they would be able to give you a socalled HbA1 test - showing the average of your blood glucose over a three month period.

There are a lot of discussions going on as to whether type 2 is because of genetics or because of lifestyle. But there seems to be an inclination towards that if you have several family members being diabetic, your odds are worse.

Thanks. I'm going back to the US, so I'll be able to get checked out by my doctor there.

I guess I'm really just wanting to know if these sound like symptoms (just out of curiosity) and if there's anything I can do to prevent any serious complications between now and next week (when I can get to a doctor)
