Easier to avoid food....

Might seem daft but can't help but feeling sometimes that it'd be easier to just skip a few meals now and then....sometimes there seems so much to take into consideration before eating (bg, carbs, insulin doses, correcting unexpected spikes) that by the time I get around to the food I don't even want it anymore, it's more of a chore... Am not planning on actually giving up on eating, just thinking out loud really....

What insulin therapy are you on again? You can get bg meters like the Accu-Chek Aviva Expert that has a bolus wizard built in to make dosing at meal-times easier, likewise if your on a pump you can use this feature also.

Food should be enjoyed and should not be seen as a chore, try and overcome these problems and if you need any help ask on the forum.

I think a lot like that. Probably one of the reasons that I don't graze or eat standard 3 meals a day... To be honest some of the reason I don't has to be because I can't be bothered to get my pump out, test, bolus etc.
I know the thoughts don't actually hit me as such but now you've posted your thoughts it has hit home to me that this could be some of my thoughts towards food too... Thankyou for posting.

I often think like that @bellabella. I just don't particularly like many foods or feel hungry and having to analyse it all for carb content etc on top of that puts me off bothering sometimes.

As long as you are having enough to eat in the day and aren't losing weight or having hypos and are aware of your reasons for not bothering sometimes then that might just be the way you are with food. Do you keep a list of meals you like with their carb content and the insulin bolus you normally use? This cuts down a bit of the analysis and reducing the calculations before eating might improve things a bit.

I hear you ! Sometimes I'm so very tired and cold when I get in all I want to do is Flob on the couch and have minions deal with my every need. For some reason, the vacancy for minions just hasn't been filled

To an extent I've got round this by taking some of the bother out of it by always cooking big batches of whatever , freezing individual portions with the carb count on the label and stockpiling in the freezer. All I need to do then is test, calculate and bolus . I do tend to use the slow cookers a lot though, and having to use precious free time for a cooking binge now and again can be a pain if I'm not in the mood That kind of halves the hassle for me.

However, the freezer looks as if I'm preparing for the zombie apocalypse , and I'm very grateful for that when I truly can't be bothered to cook.

where do I apply ?

No need to skip meals! Just skip carbs.

You can go eat all the cheese you like, or eat an entire roast chicken , or a nice salad with salmon on it and as tasty vinaigrette dressing!

No carbs = no insulin most of the time.. its way better then skipping a meal

Not all the time unfortunately.. Protein is a bolus for me.

Oh that sucks...

Okay, well still - Eat all the salad and veggies you can fit in your stomach! No bolus there if you pick your veggies right lol

As I am very specific with my food then even salads are bolused for. 1/4 onion, 3 cherry toms, 2 small waitrose stuffed peppers, cucumber, stuffed olives, lettuce, rocket, feta cheese, and an avocado with lemon, olive oil and mustard and honey dressing.

The carbs add up!! I guess I'm too exact. Thats why I prefer definitely not to snack ir graze etc. never thought of this before.. Good posting...

@donnellysdogs wow u r very sensitive to carbs and protein. Is that because you are on a pump do you think or are we all just different?

All different. I'm OTT. Was told 30 years ago not to count carbs for salad. Got pump and thought I would just weigh and measure as there were free weighing scales at the time. I was staggered. Eggs I only realised on pump etc. Years ago told not to bolus for them either. But better precision and information available from Internet nowadays.

I'm on basal Bolus injections- lantus and novorapid noblehead.
That wizard sounds great I must try get my hands on it, usually just eat the same few meals to keep things consistent, but now I'm getting bored of those!!
Thanks for the tip, love this forum

I have to Bolus for protein foods too, much less than carbs obviously but would be higher than desired if I skipped the injection!

The Aviva expert is brilliant.

See your DSN, they should be able to get hold of the Expert for you, usually it means a session with the DSN to talk you through the features of the meter and to input your I:C ratio's, but it doesn't take any longer than say an hour, but the instruction manual that comes with the Expert is very good and self-explanatory. Good luck.

not OTT at all -- its your body and your life -- I agree completely with you.

i was told the same as you that salads and green veg ( broccoli, courgette , green beans , cabbage etc ) were all free but
put a couple hundred grams worth on your plate and all of a sudden the extra 5-10 carbs from that lot can make a difference.

and I bolus for protein only meals as well..

Protein is a right sod. Especially because, as diabetics we are more pre-determined to kick into gluconeogenesis. I had 100g of chicken 1.5 hours ago and it pushed me up the best part of 3mmol/l in that time. Given the protein content is around 23g, that would equate to something similar to 10g carbs. When there is more is obviously a bigger climb.

I seem very sensitive to the protein jumps and much less so to the green veg.

Crikey, glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was totally OTT!! You've both made my day, night and year now!! Yay!!!!
