Diabetes or any long term complication of diabetes can affect your feet known as the Diabetic Foot. When more than one characterstic diabetic foot pathologies are present at the same time the condition is then known as the Diabetic Foot Syndrome.

Most common diabetic foot problems are

1. Diabetic foot ulceration
2. Diabetic foot infections
3. Charcot joints, means the progressive degeneration of a weight bearing joint eventually leading to deformity.

I thought it was the neuropathy that cause the infections and ulcerations because:
1) You don't feel any injuries
2) Injuries arent receiving adequate bloodflow so doesn't heal properly.

Small point I guess but the cause and effect path is important I think.

Just to finish it all out though, the Neuropathy is cause by poor control.

Regular checks by a qualified Podiatrist is also recommended to prevent problems associated with diabetic feet

Hi Andys
Yes i agree with you, i have to see a podiatrist every fortnight due to being left with a pressure sore after an operation i had. I had been given an epidural. It caused scare tissue and now keeps splitting, had had cellulitus in left leg from toe to hip and it was agony.
Take care

how strange i was just about to put a forum topic about feet up then this popped up in front off me,
if any one can help or give me any advice on this it would be great.

no matter how many times i may change my trainers/shoes through the day or how many times i shower and wash them as soon as i put my feet in my trainers or shoes my feet sweat instantly, and i mean they are soaking wet ( sorry to be disgusting but its true and i need help and advice.) the foot wear can be brand new or a year old and within 1 min ( not exaggerating) my feet are soaked.

and my whole foot ( both feet) go white and real soft which then becomes pain full to walk , all around my toes is the worst are but still the whole foot is bad.

also when i was around 15 my feet got so bad i went to so many doctors all over the place and no one had seen it before, i had sprays, creams, injections, tablets, special trainers. the lot and nothing work (this was before i got diagnosed type 1) my feet looked like the surface of the moon lol that's the only way to describe it my feet was full of craters . any way then one day i woke up and it was like a miracle they was like brand new feet not a mark on them . now i fear that this foot problem is coming back but worse and faster. so if there's any one who can say they have similiar problems please please please help any advice would be great.

Hi John.j, may have missed something but your thread heading said "easy steps to avoid foot..." - I didn't get anything on your post about the steps. Did I miss a link?

Hi Bretty

Your problem sounds awful! It sounds almost like trench foot to me.

The only bits of advice I can offer are probably ones you already know: -

wear only natural fibre socks - cotton, wool, and maybe bamboo fibre?

Wear only leather or fabric shoes - eg cotton canvas, preferably with natural soles and cotton liners.

I use Daktarin foot powder to prevent fungus infections in almost all my sweaty places (being overweight I have folds!) and I find it's better than any of the others. The proper powder, though - I find the spray powder doesn't have the same effect. Daktarin do other products which can only be obtained on prescription, so it might be worth asking around.

I'd also ask to be referred to a foot specialist (would that be a pedologist? I can't think of the word. J P R Williams was one, if you're a rugby fan. More medical that a podiatrist, anyway).

Best of luck.

Edit: punctuation this time!
