Ive cut down on things like bread, pasta, potatoes etc, still have the odd bit of chocolate now and again, diabates nurse told me i dont really have to cut out anything, just have it in moderation, but since cutting down on my carb intake, everythings lowered, my blood sugars, blood pressure and weight...So I guess the lower car route works for me

I was told the same thing, to just have what i want in moderation. The only thing i cut out completely was sugary drinks, switched to sugar free.

Yeah ive switched to sugarless drinks...Was never much of a potato eater, so didnt mind cutting them out anyway, I just miss pasta and rice, although, i do eat wholemeal pasta and brown rice if eating it...I love vegetables so fill my plate up with veg now

So long ago it's hard to remember, I've never been one for sweets and desserts so have to say I eat pretty much as I did before diagnosis but in smaller portions, there's a few things I eat now that I never did before diagnosis..... seeds, blueberries and tuna for example.

I'm type 1 BTW.

I'm saying i cut out sugary drinks...I'm in a band and always have a bottle of lucozade on stage with me...just in case

I read somewhere last week regarding lucozade, that it wasnt as bad as fizzy drinks for diabetics...although, in saying that, its still full of sugar, but i suppose if you arent really drinking it and only have it "incase", then i guess it cant be too bad...Shoot me if I'm wrong lol

There have been occasions where I've had a mouthful between songs but i guess you're right about it being better than normal fizzy pop...after all everyone drinks when they're poorly so it can't be bad

I've cut out pasta, rice, potato, anything with flour in, so thats pastries, pies etc. I was veggie so more carbs. I thought that if I got diabetes eating the high carb food why carry on eating it like the DN says. Never been one for sugary stuff, can't abide anything fizzy - even champagne.

Hey Geemikey!

Lucozade is very very bad for diabetics. It is neat glucose. It goes straight to your blood within a couple of minutes. Those of us on insulin use it to raise our blood glucose quickly when we have a hypo - and for me, it is even too much for that! Really, you should avoid all sugary drinks including lucozade, fizzy non-diet drinks and fruit juice. If you are able to tolerate fruit juice, you should have it in very small amounts. All carb turns to glucose and will raise your blood glucose, but sugary drinks will raise it quickest!

If you are on insulin and certain blood glucose-lowering medication such as Gliclazide, you might need to raise your blood glucose quickly sometimes, but if you are Type 2 diet only or type 2 diet+metformin, you should not need to drink Lucozade ever. Diabetes makes your BG go high, not low. It is the medication/insulin that some of us take that make our BG go low.

I eat complex carbs mikey from veg, loads a lovely veg out there. I do like a fryup once in a blue moon so have turnip and cabbage fried in butter with egg. I think the only 'proper' carbs I get is from the occasional ryvita - loaded with philly.

you have choices as to what to do.
LOTs of people keep eating the same way and let the medication do the work. They are people whose diabetes PROGRESSES and if T2 end up using insulin inside a few years.
Some of us choose to cut down on carbs. We use minimal medication and keep blood glucose figures which amaze the medics.
Eveery adult has a choice. It SHOULD be an informed choice.

I have not changed my diet but i inject insulin to cover it. I did try a little while ago to try low carb but just couldn't do it, as it mostly cuts out the foods I like. I need to lose weight so I'm trying portion control which is also hard because it leaves me hungry. I'm going to try and exercise (I have never in my life I didn't see the need to do it) I need to get in that mind set.

Hi Sarah i find it hard to exercise...however i think I'll start by taking the dog out more often
