Eating little and often

Hi everyone,

I'm after a bit of advice if that is ok?
I have had a rough few weeks where I was struggling to eat as it was causing nausea and stomach cramps and I was really off my food.

I've now started on anti acid medication tablets as I was told I have hiatus hernia , covered in another post.

So I am back on my food now but am eating very small portions quite often. I am starving but am resisting pigging out is I know it will cause the cramps and nausea again.

So since being back on my food I am having high bm levels at every test. Always around 16. I am testing at every snack and having to correct it too , although I fear this might not be the answer. As I'm eating every 2-3 hours I don't think my bm levels are accurate as the nova rapid probably still doing it's thing.

I am taking my Lantus normally at night and am still high at 15.0 in the morning.
Before all this happened my Lantus dose was good and leaving me at 7.0 in the mornings. Just because I have changed my eating it seems it's gone to pot. Doesn't help that every day is high in the morning so I'm off on the wrong foot chasing it before the day starts. I realise that a good am reading makes the days control easier.

Here is an example.

Breakfast reading 9am = 15.2
Carbs: 40g
Nova rapid: 7units ( 4 + correction of 3)

11:30am reading 14.8

Unfortunately I didn't test that day until the dinner time which was after a 2 hr walk and I was back to 5.3 but was back in the teens the following morning.

My guy feeling is Lantus needs changing and that my daily tests are being obscured by the frequent eating and injecting every few hours.

Anybody got any ideas apart from fasting to check my Lantus . Am I ok to be eating and injecting frequency with my snacking style of eating?

Thank you in advance

Adrian

The first rule is always check that your basal insulin is set at the right dose, unfortunately the only way of doing that is by doing some basal fasting checks, once you know that is right you can work on the meal-time ratio's.

Also to add, if you've been unwell over the last few weeks this will no doubt push your bg readings up, it might just be worth having a chat with your DSN about your bg readings.

An alternative to fasting completely is doing low carbs, ie egg/any meat/salad/fish/cherries/grapefruit/tea/coffee (google it there'll be a whole list)

Unless that's what you meant by fasting anyway..

When you're ill, you normally need more insulin anyway, so increasing ratios whilst your struggling may be a place to start?

Hope you feel better soon :S

Just to state the obvious - make sure your Lantus hasn't gone off. Check expiry dates, check for cloudiness, open a new pack.

If not then Lantus needs to increase. And yes the frequent injections are clouding the issue during the day but the overnight rise is unmistakable, the Lantus is not cutting it overnight.

Ok thanks for all the comments.

I find it difficult to adjust / change ratios etc so wouldn't know where to start when it comes to having more when unwell. My meter goes into ' random number generator' mode.

My fingers are beaten up a bit after having my bm tested every two hours whilst spending a week or so in and out of hospital.
I will start with the Lantus then to ensure I get a good reading in the morning and take if from there.

In general after trying to knuckle down on my diabeties control before I became unwell I'm finding my readings more up and down now I'm being stricter, testing & correcting more and carb counting more . Maybe because I didn't see the extra fluctuating readings I'm seeing more recently.
