Eating on the go

I am 42 yrs old type 2 for 3 years taking 4 500mg metformin a day.

Today i had to work on the go and didn't bring food with me, so i bought a sausage and mushrooms sandwich on brown and a cheese salad sandwich on brown for later. Is this ok or is there better options out there I could of bought? Only options was a cafe where i am working.

If the cafe did an all day breakfast of bacon eggs and mushrooms, that would have been low carb; or eat the cheese salad, but throw the bread away.
 
Hi Kev. Best way to remember - bread is bread, even brown, and it's best avoided. Same goes for pastry, so sausage rolls, pies etc should be avoided.

PS - Get those rolls from Lidl I told you about, then you can have cheese, cold meat etc in them!
 
If your only option was sandwiches it is better to just eat the filling. If I am stuck in town for the day I just buy some cold chicken from the supermarket.
 
I recently meeting my wife in town before a pre-theatre meal, late afternoon I became very hungry the only LCHF food I could find was a pack of cooked chicken from a Sainsburys Local.

The pre-theatre meal wasn't so diabetic friendly but I can report the play was good.

If that's all there is, they're the best options.
It's hard to eat bacon and eggs if you can't sit down to eat, and just eating the filling isn't going to do much from a cheese salad sandwich if you're there all day.

A lot better than cakes, crisps or mars bars. :)

Have tried them rolls not a fan i'm afraid was gutted as well needed them rolls in my life

Bottom line is that you need to test your own blood to see what effects these carbs have on you, nobody can say if they're good or bad for you. Chances are they won't be good, all of the above foods will affect blood glucose levels, but the question is by how much.

Are you self testing yet? It's really important to do so.

I'm gonna invest in a testing device but don't know what kind to get or anything like that, i am eating the bottom half of the rolls as a night time snack with ham cheese and tomato. If i only have the bottom half i can eat them, beggars can't be choosers lol

I've got a SD Codefree (I think a few people use this one) - the unit is quite reasonable and the test strips are one of the cheaper ones.
 
Kev try a website called home health uk,that's where I got my SD Codefree meter and test strips.There are links on this forum for discount codes for the strips.Also tick yes to being diabetic and all is VAT free.
You could ask for a meter and strips from your GP.Unfortunately many here have had mixed results with that.So good luck.
Testing is essential for control of your BG. I test on waking to give a fasting BG level,and then before I eat and 1 hr and 2 hrs after.Together with recording the results of what I have eaten and how these foods have affected me.You will soon build up a data base of what you can tolerate, and hopefully a reduction in BG readings.What is your latest HbA1c?
Check out the what have you eaten today threads which may give snack or on the go ideas.I have walnuts,cheese,salami or other cold meats,salads with mayo and all of the afore mentioned.Tubs of ready made prawn cocktail are good too just ask for a plastic fork and a napkin.
Incidentally prawn cocktail in a buttered Lidl roll is great ;-)
 
I like to have the tubs of egg mayo and bacon you can buy from most supermarkets, the ones from Asda are 200 grams and only 2.2 grams of carbs per 100 grams.
