Eating out....

We (husband and myself) went out with friends for a meal at a hotel last night. I'm recently diagnosed T2 and pal has high cholesterol. So we both had problems deciding what to eat. We both plumped for sweet potato and lentil soup, followed by baked salmon with a herb crust - maybe we shouldn't have had the caper sauce...... but it did taste good. I didn't touch the mashed potatoes, but ate all of the red cabbage, carrots and broccolli. Neither of us had a pudding, though that took a lot of will power to say no to the bitter lemon tart! We left the hotel at 9.45pm and had no chance of a walk.
This morning my fasting sugars at 8.30 am were 8.8 is that good after such a meal?
This morning (every morning!) for breakfast I've had a bowl of porridge with low fat soya milk and very few cranberries and flavoured with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Lunch is to be poached egg with asparagus, griddled peppers, sweet potato, mushrooms and a slice of multi grain farmhouse batch toast. For tea I'll take a fruit salad to work to eat at 5.pm (mango, blackberries, and small apple), sadly no banana as I believe they are not so good for me. Or can I eat the occassional small banana?
On my new eating regime I've lost just over 1 stone in 6 wks. My husband has lost weight too and he's not diabetic!!
Can I have treats like hotel food once in a blue moon?
I do have an 85% bar of chololate in the kitchen cupboard, it's lasted me for over 2 weeks. Before T2 I could demolish a LARGE bar of Aero in minutes, followed by another given the chance! I'll not touch any white chocolate now, a bit like an alcoholic as I know that if I have one bit I will want another!

I have been out for a couple of meals the last few weeks and i tried to make good choices. it is difficult but in this particular restaurant, you have to choose the side separately so it was easier to say - no side please...rather than getting the plate with potatoes etc...and then try my best to not eat them

went out on saturday for a meal...had big salad and then a nice steak with peas and roasted mushrooms oh and a cider as well.... the readings varied by 0.5mmol before and after so i reckon that is not too bad

i think if we do not allow ourselves to be a bit naughty ...occassionally....but still sensible naughty this whole thing becomes very difficult to deal with..

Hi Beryl

I think it all depends how you are affected at the 2 hr post meal mark, I've eaten out a number of times, always chosen carefully and never been over 7.5. Even had a 5.5 after eating at Bem Brasil and a bucket full of red wine

Are you generally testing? I envy your porridge if you are, if you're not - I advise test it.

Hi. Looks like you had a very sensible meal at the hotel. I would tend to measure your BS 2 hours after a typical meal and not worry about the early morning test as it can be affected by the overnight liver dump. This way to can find out whcih foods affect you. 85% chocolate is very low carb so you can eat quite a few squares!

Hi Beryl,

you mention sweet potato a couple of times there. According to my carb book that's still quite high - 16.4g of carb for 90g. It's better than actual potato, but not much. Things like parsnip (6.5g) and carrot (1.7g) are much better and Celeriac and Swede are almost zero.

It's hard to say what effect the meal had on your fasting levels as the reading was quite a long time after the meal. Do you take 2hr readings? I often eat porridge for breakfast but it does push my levels - a reasonable bowl does have 13-26g carbs depending on the size of the bowl. I only have it if I'm exercising right afterwards.

If you can manage fruit then that's great - many on here can, but I can only eat berries for flavouring. But the key is to test test test. You're getting good weight loss, so you're doing well but use testing to make sure you're not getting spikes at the 1 and 2hr marks.

It's not all about carbs Swimmer. Some foods have slower release and do not spike so much.

There are many health benefits for sweet potatoes. Read the bit about benefits to blood sugars.

I make oven chips with them and put rosemary and garlic on them after they have been brushed with oil.

thanks for all your replies. I'll 'digest' them better tomorrow, just arrived home from work and have to be back in another 8 1/2 hrs so its fruit ready for tomorrow's lunch, porridge in the fridge and now off to bed. No rest for the wicked. I take aboard the testing 2 hrs. So will try to test 2 hrs after food as much as I can, though at work it's not too easy at times.
will look back tomorrow for any more replies. Finish at 3pm tomorrow, so not too late.

bye
