Hi
I've not been carbohydrate counting long and have no idea how to do it when eating out. What do you guys do? It's the pub quiz Christmas meal tonight, I can't wait but don't want to much up the insulin. Thanks x
there is a book and app called carbs and cals which is very helpful but if you want specific places to eat out then if you go on their website they might have carb Info if not I email them or you can always ask and see if they know when you're there
Usually just a bit of a guess tbh. at first did carry the carbs and cals book for visual ref. The longer you do it for the easier it gets to take an educated guess.
Just give an educated guess based on your experiences at home, better to err on the side of caution and under-estimate than over-estimate and a hypo spoiling your evening, you can always correct your bg later in the evening should you choose.
Yes, you do get used to carb content. My DN gave me an excellent leaflet by Roche with little pictures of plated quantities for 10gm carbs. I guess as many do. If I'm out and driving I will under-inject. If I'm home and hence not driving I will inject more and risk going near hypo.
Carbs and cals app is great, it's £3.99 but so worth it.....it shows you visual portion sizes and tells you the number of carbs for each portion. I live by it, has so many food items on there and is so useful when eating out
Could chose something in the menu that isn't too carby. If you have say a burger, chips, onion rings, then a pudding, there's a lot of guesswork in there and the room for error is quite large. On the other hand, if you had say gammon and chips, all you'd have to guess for is the chips, so the room for error is smaller than before.
