Hi I’m new to the forum today and decided to sign in to see if anyone had any advice for me. I’m type 2 diet controlled current hba1c 50. It hovers around there has been 53 and 49.
On Wednesday I went into hospital for an angiogram which turned into an urgent situation with main artery being blocked 99%. So now I have a stent and the diagnosis is Coronary Artery Disease.
My diabetic control of food has always been low or no sugar and I never looked at fat content. Diabetes control successful throughout and am almost down to prediabetic.
My problem now is finding food that is suitable for diabetics with heart disease. Apart from the obvious omega 3 and veg I’m lost. Any ideas? Thank you

Sorry to hear about the recent diagnosis, I hope that the stent will make a difference to how you feel. My brother and a couple of friends have had stents and it's made a big difference.

It's not really possible to advise as I'm not a doctor. Obviously you have been relatively successful with a low sugar diet and I expect you have been told to avoid fat to keep cholesterol down. I think that reducing carbs rather than sugars (sugars are a carb) is worth looking into. You'd be surprised how much carbs affects total cholesterol.

The average saturated fat intake for a man is 30gms a day and for women it's 20gms (source NHS). The fat in a 170gm (6 oz) lean steak is about 25gms so a steak would put you over the recommended amount. It might be worth googling a weeks worth of the food you eat presently, just to see exactly how much fat you are consuming. There will be some who can consume fat without it affecting their cholesterol levels. Personally I know my total cholesterol will go up if I consume more fat than usual.

Best Regards

There are many cardiologists and others who have proposed common links between T2 and heart disease being mainly down to hyperinsulinemia.
If you are controlling T2 through diet then it should also help your heart too.
The old myth that saturated fat is bad for the heart has been pretty well debunked. In fact there have been a few studies that suggest it may even be protective (just don't tell the vegans). The PURE study was one of those.
