Hi there. New to site. 30 yrs type 1. Novorapid and levermir. Take only 2 units of levermir before bed but still going hypo around 2am. Waking up to sugars in high teens which doc says is dawn phenomenon. Has anyone experienced anything like this sensitivity to levermir? Re dawn phenomenon i try to manage by exercising in the evening which tends to reduce morning readings. Any other ideas? I may well be heading towards a pump at this stage but just wanted to try other strategies first. Thanks.

@Tim65, your early morning highs may also be enhanced by rebound as the liver dumps glucose overnight to counter the low you experience.

I've found that Dawn Phenomenon is much worse when I eat carbs pretty much after 6pm, so I've basically stopped doing that. It makes a huge difference to me. I don't find that exercise makes a huge amount of difference.

On your Levemir - do you take two doses? 2u before bed is a tiny amount. If that is all you are taking, you could move it to the morning so that you don't get lows overnight and are better positioned to monitor what is happening during the day.

Discuss with your Dr/DSN about moving your levemir dose back to early evening and see if that makes any difference , your high waking bg levels could be down to DP but may also be down to you over-treating the 2am hypo's, if you stop the night hypo's and still wake high then its almost certainly DP.

However a pump will go a long way to resolve these issues as you can set multiple basal rates to deal with things like DP.

Many thanks for your response. I'm taking one dose of levermir. I didn't take my normal dose last night but this morning instead. The result of this was a bs of 4.8 around 2am which had risen to 11.9 by 5am. I'll keep this regime under review for a few days to see how it goes. Thanks for the tip re carbs after 6.

Thanks for the response noblehead. I think it's probably a bit of both. I'm focusing on getting rid of hypos over next few days before seeing what can be done about DP.
