I think diabetes can give erectile dysfunction, see your GP or DN and explain the problems to them. There are medications that can help.

I don't think I would consider this a brave post, this problem is reasonably common in diabetes and therefor a concern to men, so I would post this if I had a issue in this area.

Anyhow, yes go to see the doc, there's plenty of reasons and treatments you can take.

I think any man admitting to this kind of problem on a public forum is quite brave if I am honest and like I said its what i considered to be a brave post

Don't let the doc fob you off either. What ever you need can be prescribed for diabetics via NHS totally free of charge providing the script is endorsed SLS.

Have been Type 2 since 2002 & on insulin since 2005 & unfoirtunately the E-D has got progressively worse and nothing seems to help. Have tried many things some prescribed some not and apparently as with most things diabetes related it affects all of us differently. I'm sorry this might be seen as unhelpful but Drs have tried to help me and failed and I see no reason to hide the truth from people. Diabetes is horrible inthe way it affects your life and those you love and cherrish. What you have to do is accept that you have it and see how you can fight it and make your life as fulfilljng and loving towards your partner as possible. Just cos my todger wont play ball doesnt mean the rest of me us useless!!!!

I was diagnosed Type 2 about 15 years ago, and ED appeared at much the same time. The first treatment I used was penile injections - very effective, and as the need is great, nothing like as daunting as you might think. Then Viagra came on the scene, and worked well for me. And then - Cialis, which is much better for me as the effect lasts for 2 to 4 days.

I do know from talking to similarly afflicted friends that the effect/dosage of these drugs varies from one person to another (that applies to the injections, too), so don't be fobbed off with 10mg of Cialis if 20mg is needed.

I am more than 70 years old now, and still active, so don't despair! I'm sure there's always a way. By the way, I did also try a penis pump. This works well enough, but it's not a pretty sight, I feel, and it's not for me.

Diabetes can have quite an impact on both male and female genitals, though it's obviously more visible in men. Erectile dysfunction is not uncommon and can be quite a problem if you've been diabetic for a long time and if your control is poor. The issue is obviously compounded by one's own internal dialogue - it didn't work last time, what if it doesn't work this time and so on. Mental state, depression, and tiredness can have an effect too.

I'd recommend a discussion with your GP, to rule out other factors. The GP can prescribe viagra/cialis, as well as refer you to an andrology clinic or urologist to see if there are any underlying issues other than the diabetes.

It's often said that penetrative sex is only one aspect of a loving, caring relationship. Whilst that's true, it doesn't help anyone who is concerned with their ED and trying to get a solution to it.

I have had Type 2 for more than 10 years and quite early on noticed some strange erectile behaviour - wonky willy or a crooked erection. This has sorted itself out with better sugar control and Viagra. The blue pill does not work as well as it used to and it does not help that I take betablockers for my heart too. I used to get loss of erection whilst having sex which is literally a bit of a come down.

Timing is all. Morning sex is best as if I wake with an erection, which I occasionally do, then things seem ready for action. It also means the beta blockers have worn off and Viagra will work better.

I must say things have improved with a low GL diet which keeps my sugar levels lower and more even. I have lost weight and do some muscle toning exercises, which help both parties. I think some pelvic floor exercising may be beneficial too.

I must say I thought I would have lost it some time back so I am glad things have continued as they have.

As reflected in a number if the complications if diabetes, nerve damage is a common effect of glucose levels that are too high. This can affect penile function. It is also worthwhile getting your GP to check your testosterone levels. Low testosterone can cause libido issues.

It's not libido that's the problem! The desire is there all right, but the equipment goes on strike.

To go back to the original post, I also have found that things don't work as well if I'm lying on my back. If I turn onto my side, and face the object of my libido (!) I seem to function better. No doubt all to do with blood flow.

It's curious to me how most folk talk about Viagra in this connection. Levitra is at least as good in my experience, and Cialis a clear winner. I wonder what the relative costs of each drug are?

I was diagnosed Jan 2008, but had probably been "pre-diabetic" for 2 or 3 years prior to that. On top of everyhting else Type 2 brings to one's life, the ED (erectile dysfunction) in us blokes feels like the last straw. But (a) it is v. common; (b) it is treatable-ish; and (c) it doesn't spell the "end" of one's lovelife. I was prescribed cialis, the little blue tablet, as you'll hear it referred to. It never really worked for me, my erection was mostly like a reject banana! Most embarrassing, at first. Then I spoke to my new partner, came clean and we discussed it. It turns out that I have "magic fingers" (her words) and our love life is brilliant. Some "do's and don'ts": do talk about it with your partner; do find ways to work around the issue by being imaginative with the many sex aids out there. That can be part of an amazing new journey for you both to undertake, believe me. Don't blame yourself or feel depressed, even when it gets you down occasionally. It's just an (unwelcome) side-effect of the diabetes. I do sometimes yearn for that morning glory erection of old, when I almost pole vaulted out of the bed if I fell out too quickly! But even now I nurse the hope that now I'm on insulin (Ive got my Type 1.5 badge) I may turn things around in the course of time. Lastly, do what you can to improve your lifestyle, including how/when/what you eat. It's a huge life-changer, diabetes. Don't let yourself become labelled as diseased. You aren't diabetes, you just HAVE diabetes. Hope that helps!


I was diagnosed type 2 back in April 2012. I am on metformin 1000mg twice a day. Since being diagnosed I have made significant lifestyle changes, lots of exercise, cut out all junk and fried food eats lots of salad and fruits. My sugars are now in very good control.
Recently I have noticed that my morning errections have dissappered and that when lying down my errections subside and dissapear. Its extremly frustrating.
I am in my early forties.

Could this be due to the diabetes or the medication?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I agree he needs to consult with his doctor again, I had a similar problem & he fobbed me off by laughing & telling me to take Viagra! I was not amused , read up on line the different problems diabetics can face & then asked for another blood test which confirmed that the testosterone in my system was very low. I was the pt on 2 weekly injections which worked a treat! it also gave me much more energy to carry out normal daily work etc. Unfortunately the manufacturers stopped making it 12 months ago, so I was given a gel to rub in on a daily basis ( to my thighs or abdomen!) it is not as effective, luckily my doctor then found a substitute in injection which I have been having for the last 8 months , until it too was withdrawn! It is still available to buy on the web from unlicensed suppliers but my chemist has informed me that it should be available again shortly!. So have a word with your doctor & ask for a blood test - it can make all the difference ! I also wonder why these injections are so difficult to come by via the NHS they are not expensive £ 35 for 6 viles which would last 6 months. Has any one any ideas how to make sure they are available?

I am on a testosterone undecanoate injection that is once every 3 months. There are no problems with its supply and I have it on repeat prescription. Low testosterone is a common issue for those with diabetes. Mine is caused by an issue with my pituitary gland and I am under the care if an endocrinologist for it.

What's SLS mean?

Diagnosed 7yrs ago and after 6 months my Nurse Practitioner actually asked me if I had any problems, I told her that although I had no major problems achieving an erection I had some problems maintaining it for very long. She gave me a prescription for Viagra (4 per month) and added it to my repeat list. I have now changed from Viagra > Cialis > Levitra > Cialis as I find that if I use one for too long the effects diminish. If possible get the Cialis as it is quicker acting and last longer compared to Viagra & Levitra, I find that it can start to work after around 45 mins and the effects can last for up to 36 hrs so in effect you get two days for one 8) .
As a diabetic all of your prescriptions are FREE whatever the medication is for, I didn't pay for any prescriptions at all during the 2 yrs before I was 60.

Tattyjacket - are you sure about 2.5 Mg?? I thought Cialis only came in 10Mg and 20Mg sizes. I get 8 20Mg tabs every 8 weeks. Two or three times that would be much better - you could then be at the ready continuously, and still way below what seems to be the max allowed dose (I tab every 24 hrs, I think - can anybody confirm this??).

The dose is marked on the pill, it's on your prescription, and on the box. 10mg is not the maximum - I've been using 20Mg for literally years!
