Evening meal

Hey all, I'm struggling with levels after my last meal still. I've had good readings all day until just and I don't understand why. My level before my evening meal was 6.7 then 3 hours after it was 6.4 so all good, just checked before going to bed and its 13.4! Could it be a delayed spike from the brown rice I had? Or my lantus running out? I tend to get this a lot where it's good all day and high before bed.

Hi Stu,
That is a bit odd. Did you wash your hands before testing? Was your Lantus delayed? Have you had anything to drink?

If I'm ever late with Lantus e.g. I'm on a night out and didn't bring it with me, then I'll top up with a unit or two of Novorapid.

A meal with a high fat content can cause a delayed spike many hours after eating, if this isn't the case then just monitor your bg levels over the next few nights and make the necessary adjustments to your insulin should your bg continue to rise.

My meal last night had no fat what so ever was just plain brown rice and tuna. I take my lantus at around 10.30 each night. I'm seeing my consultant on the 25th so I'm recording all my readings at the moment, see if they can suggest anything.

Brown rice and tuna is less likely the cause than some error in taking the reading. I get this oddities sometimes and used to liken it to a lump of sugar floating around my bloodstream like some iceberg in the sea. I then discovered that it is a more widespread problem with the quality of blood sample that you get via finger pricking. Yesterday for example I got a 5.1 two hours after a meal. I wondered if this was an error, I hade been expecting a 6.2 or simiilar. I had a Wienerschnitzel for dinner which is of course coated with breadcrumbs. Not too many, but refined carbs nonetheless. I did the test again on a different finger and got a 7.9. Way too high now but which is the wrong reading? So I did a 3rd test. Now it was 5.3.

I will repeat the Schnitzel dinner again tonight to be sure. I'd love it to give me such a low reading because I'm off to Bavaria for my hols and am having to work out what meals will be OK for me. I suppose the plum stew filled semolina dumplings with the crushed poppyseed and sugar topping and vanilla sauce will be off the list of safe foods though I don't think Apfelstrudel will be too clever either.

Lantus used to do that to me Stu, when my consultant suggested having x2 injections of Lantus per day my control went beserk but what did not work for me may work for you. How about trying two injections of Lantus? If you do, I would advise you test your sugars regularly before meals and two hours after.

Good luck with this.
