..........who, where and how the glucose meters we use everyday came about? Apparently I've been working next door to the building that was key to our 'easy' life!

Hi @slip. Re diabetes I think it's very easy to forget all the research, investment, time, knowledge and brilliant minds that have got us to where we are today. In my 27 yrs things have come on leaps and bounds and maybe in the next 27 who knows.
It's nice that you've found something extremely relevant to you as an individual right on your doorstep as it were.
 
Nice one @slip , we do take so much for granted without giving a second thought to the people who designed and developed such fantastic devices.

The insulin pen was another great invention, here's an article about a lady who helped design the first pen, her 4 year old daughter had type 1 so you can see where the motivation came from :
