If by BGL is over 15 can I still exercise (if I have the energy)? I am not ill but I am deliberately running my levels high to get back my warning symptoms.
If your diabetes is over 13mmol prior to exercise, the exercise probably will not lower your bg, and it is likely it will rise. This is because you probably do not have enough insulin circulating in your body. Consider injecting an extra dose of quick-acting insulin to reduce the level before you exercise, and always check for ketones. If ketones are present in the urine you need to avoid exercise until your bg levels is below 13mmol. (DAFNE Course Handbook 2008)
I've been on painkillers following a operation last week and my bg have been erratic, on Sunday I had a reading of 14 prior to walking the dog, so I injected 2 units of novorapid and went for a 1 hour walk, came back and was 5.6, so the combination of the 2 units and exercise reduced my bg to normal levels.
I usually reduce my meal time insulin by 2 units if I know that I am exercising within the next hour or so, it always works well but it is hard to get a balance, too short of a walk and bg stays higher than normal, too long and I end up going low, hence why I now tend to stick with the same route and distance........dogs probably cheesed off with the same walk!
Hope your hypo awareness returns soon!
