From the responses, it's clear to me that different people have a different definition of exercise so we probably need to be more specific. Although I've lost 2-3 stones this year, I'm still pretty heavy at nearly 17 stones.
I go to the gym three times a week (usually). The minimum I do is a 400 calorie workout on the treadmill which takes about half an hour. I've had to build up to this at it involves either a steep incline or some 2 minute jogging sessions. The maximum is the above plus 45 reps on various "resistance" machines, which I count as about 1000 calories in total. In the summer, I also go on at least an hour long walk every few days.
The instructors at the gym generally agree that you don't get a good return from exercise until you've gone for about 20 minutes. I can't comment but I've taken this advice.
I find that a gym session (of whatever duration) definitely helps my next pre-meal level (maybe down from 7.2 or so to 6.0 or so). I did try measuring during exercise once and got very low levels (4.0 or thereabouts) but this wasn't really practiacal. I generally finish about 11.15, go for a shot in the hot tub, dry off on a sunlounger for 10 minutes thaen get changed and drive home for about 12.00 and measure then.
I agree with the view that any exercise is good, and a little is better than none. I've got to the stage now where I really miss it if I can't do it. I would encourage anybody to do a little and build up gradually till they get to a level they are comfortable.
I'm fitter and lighter now (as a result of the wake up call of a T2 diagnosis) than I've been in 10 years.
