On World diabetes day TU diabetes, one of the bigger US Forums devised a simple scheme to get people involved in World diabetes day and to show the effectiveness of exercise as one of the main planks of both treatment and prevention.

At 2pm, people tested their blood glucose, exercised in what ever way they wished for 14 minutes and then retested. Other forums became involved with a fair number of people taking part from all over the World.
I exercise quite a lot but was a bit sceptical about 14 minutes...was it really long enough?

People posted their results on the forums. Exercise included everything. There were conventional activities like jogging, biking and walking but someone folded the laundry, another chopped wood and lots used the wii fit.
I decided to see how well it really worked. As lots of people did more than 14 minutes and some people weren't clear, I only counted those that said they did 14 minutes and only those that posted on Tu diabetes on the day itself.(rather than other forums or later)
It isn't really a 'scientific' exercise but seems that 14 minutes was surprisingly effective.
This is what I found.
123 people with diabetes
97 people's blood glucose levels fell. The average fall was 25.5mg/dl (1.41mmol/l)
23 peoples blood glucose levels rose. The average rise was 11.6mg/dl(0.64 mmol)/l

Some people whose levels rose commented that it was just after lunch, or that the exercise period was too short. Only a couple said that exercise always put up their levels.
I sorted the results into ascending order of 1st test to show the results graphically. The (sorry it came out a bit big on here)

There were lots of enthusisastic comments including this one:
"
What an eye-opener. Before exercise, 147, after walking on treadmill for 14 minutes, 108. What an incentive to take care of myself while I am in early stages"
